Aircel Unveils 3G Technology in Chennai

CHENNAI:Leading mobile service provider Aircel said it has successfully tested 3G in Chennai.The 3G trials were conducted in association with China based ZTE Corporation, a telecom equipment manufacturer, Jagdish Kini, Group Chief Executive Officer said, Aircel Ltd, told reporters here. "We have successfully completed our 3G trials at Chennai in accordance with the 3G-Partnership Project and the guidelines issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)," he said. The company expects to roll out the service commercially in December 2007, once the policy is announced and if the company gets license for providing 3G services.DoT has allowed existing mobile service providers to conduct 3G trials in select cities within a stipulated timeframe of March 31, 2007. Aircel was given permission to conduct trials at Chennai, Coimbatore, Bhubaneshwar, Shillong and Guwahati, K V P Baskar, Chief Executive Officer, said. Aircel would be undertaking 3G trials in Coimbatore soon, he said.Kini said Aircel has tested a complete array of 3G services including voice calls and video calls as well as rich data services such as downloading of movies, music, java games and pictures. HSDPA-based (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) services like downloading large volumes of business data and streaming movies online at 3.3. mbps have also been tested.Kini said the company would be rolling out its mobile services in more than 20 places in the next 24 months and its Wimax services in more than 40 cities in the next 18 to 24 months. This would require a total investment of about $400 million Kini said.
