Accelrys launches R&D centre in Bangalore

BANGALORE: Accelrys Software Solutions on Tuesday announced the formal launch of its R&D centre here with an investment of a "couple of million dollars" and said its headcount would go up from 50 to 102 in next six months.
The Bangalore centre will be third after centres in San Diego, USA, and Cambridge in Britain, Mark Emkjer, president, Accelrys Inc, a subsidiary of Pharmacopeia Inc, told reporters here.
He said the Bangalore operations would include work on Chemical Informatics and Bio-informatics products. "We would like the Bangalore centre to lead the way in quality control and quality assurance," he said.
"We have invested a couple of millions of dollars," Emkjer said but declined to specify. "We intend to continue investing," he said.
Pharmacopeia chairman, president and CEO Joseph A Mollica said the firm had collaborations with major biopharmaceutical companies and was developing 54 projects at present. Eighty per cent of its customers were pharmaceutical and bio-tech companies.
Accelrys is a leading global computational science company founded in 2001 by bringing together five specialist companies.
Accelrys software covers disciplines from gene sequence analysis and proteomics, through medicinal chemistry, to inorganic chemistry, polymer science and formulation design.
