Bangalore: Are you a calorie-conscious eater? Then, you have a new calculator. A new iPhone app 'Meal Snap' created by Daily Burn will give you the calorie details in a food item that you photograph using the app. DailyBurn, a fitness and nutrition social network, has developed several other fitness and diet-related iPhone applications. Its latest app, called the Meal Snap costs $2.99. After taking the photograph, the app uses a variety of algorithms and a data bank of about 500,000 foods to give you a calorie read-out within minutes to give you an idea of how many calories you are going to consume. The app gives averages for a food category rather than a calculation of a specific food item. Although the app fails to identify food correctly at times and sometimes calorie counts are too broad to be useful, the consumers can rate accuracy of each identification and calorie count to improve the recognition component. Apart from this, the biggest advantage is that with this app, users can keep a record of the foods that they eat which really helps them in calorie counting because with Meal Snap, users automatically collect a visual food diary to calculate the calorie count.
