NEW DELHI: India's first infrastructure show staring here Tuesday will see participation from as many as 80 Chinese companies, according to the organiser. The Indian Infrastructure Show 2003 (TIIS) is being held as part of the three-day International Engineering and Technology Fair (IETF), said the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Around 350 companies from countries like Australia, Austria, Britain, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the U.S. will participate in the mega event. "China will be the partner country with exhibitors from more than 35 countries participating in the three-day conference cum exhibition," Ashok Soota, president of CII told reporters here. The trade event is being used as one of the platforms by CII to enhance India-China bilateral trade to $10 billion by 2005 under a six-point agenda, he added. The IETF is expected to lead to several collaborations between India and Chinese companies in the near future, said Soota. The Chinese companies will represent a wide spectrum of industries such as electrical machinery, consumer products, home appliances, refrigeration equipment, construction equipment, components, and metal products. In October, CII will also organise a 'Made in India Show' in Beijing focusing on information and communication technology, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. A 50-member CEOs delegation to China will coincide with the show, while roadshows in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu would precede it. Other concurrent events would include an Indian fashion show, a food festival and pop show. To boost the bilateral cooperation, CII is also planning to open its 14th overseas office in China later this year. The bilateral trade between India and China recorded a 37.5-percent rise to $4.94 billion over the previous year in the calendar year 2002. While Chinese exports increased by 40.8 percent, Indian exports to China rose by 33.7 percent. "Bilateral trade in the month of December 2002 grew at the rate of 90 percent compared to the same month in the previous year," said Soota. The main accelerators in the increase being the strong growth in India's exports of iron and steel, electrical machinery, paperboard, organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, Precious Stones and plastics. "With China as partner country for the IETF this provides the platform to enhance Sino-Indian trade by 50 percent over the next year," said Soota. Over 20 ministerial and trade delegations from India and abroad will attend IETF that will focus on 12 key sectors including airports, housing and urban infrastructure, ports, railways, roads and highways, power and telecommunications.
