Rs.500 laptop turns out a laughing stock
By   siliconindia news bureau
Wednesday,04 February 2009, 22:12 hrs

Tirupati: Crushing all expectations, the presumed head-on-head competitor to MIT's $100 laptop, the Rs.500 ($10) laptop was unveiled to be a laughing stock. The 'prototype' of the device with two GB RAM inaugurated at Tirupati was declared to be a mere computing device and not a laptop.

"How can just a computing device bridge the digital divide and make access to computer literacy affordable to the masses? Where will poor students get computers to jack this gizmo with? Will Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) provide computers and internet connectivity in rural and remote areas? There is no clarity among the officials themselves," a Professor from Sri Venkateswara University told The Times of India. Designed by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras, UGC and MHRD, the computing device was nowhere near to MIT's $100 laptop. It was a device that comprised of a hard disk with e-books, e-journals and relevant educative material through the 'Sakshat' portal.

The so called laptop even appeared to be smaller than the normal laptop with 10-inch length and five-inch width, making many heads to rethink on the definition of a laptop. There was also a buzz that it's a 'Nano-top'. Earlier, officials said the price was working out to be $20 but with mass production it was bound to come down to $10 (Rs 500) and thus become affordable for every student in India.

In the same way, this $10 laptop is a great thought and should be supported by everyone.
I really appreciate the approach of Vellore Institute of Technology for their approach.

38: I appreciate the team who dared to do such miracle. Even if one can not compare it with Laptops, it will serve the purpose of most of the peoples especially students. It can provide an easy access to e books, internet etc which are the real demand for general student( except It peoples & engineers). Before laghing one should think about the utility of the same. What one can purchase in 500 rupees ( not more than a pen drive of 2 GB). Then why anybodt is worrying about its configuration......... i dont know. Again i would like to thank those people who are involved in this miracle.

50: The whole premise is fallacious. The basic pricing seems to me a marketing hype. $10 is not realistic by any standard (given all economies of scale) for any device to be at a comparable level to the current laptop. And why is only Rs 500 an affordable number? I believe for a real useful device parents can afford anywhere around Rs 5000 i.e the MIT laptop.

They are so smart they cannot afford to witness poor school children also get an opportunity to have a hand on such devices. may be they did not get this opportunity. well take it in right spirit and hats off to people behind this.

55: The people/institution may get more money/benefits from government. After getting all the money/benefits, they will close this project. Tata also told earlier 1 lacs car going to coming soon. But the reality is not like that. Government should not give single money till they make it successful. When Dayanithi maran was minister, he went to every state and gave local language office program cd's to public and got publicity. Also c-dac get lot of fund for that project. But the reality is they just used openoffice only and they changed the labels only in local language.

56: Some Indian developers seem to underestimate their accomplishments. A $10 computing device is a great accomplishment in itself. You cannot get a good calculator for $10 or even $50 on the market. Indian schools can certainly use a 2 GB RAM device. Be truthful about the device and take credit for it. On the PR side, promise less and deliver more. Take pride where it is due. Reporters should understand the measure of the accomplishment and write objective stories.

I dont know if this trial will make it, but i know that ill always support everyone who tries.

65: It is very easy to criticize such an effort, which must have taken long and hard effort to design and build this limited function laptop. For rural India, where 70 percent of us still lives, it can be of a big advantage if it can provide with educational material and help with studies. The cost of books alone easily will exceed this. Any such effort in this direction should be commended, not criticized.

I think this is big step forward, even it is a half of step. Go Guys.

I understand some says it is a lap toy but I am sure this will create an awareness and it will make the people closure to the technology , this is not Korean or Japanese , this is indigenous , purely Indian. Those who are comparing , they are the laughing stock.I appreciate the effort of all the people who contributed for this.
