5 Customs and Traditions You Never Heard of

2. Initiation with Bullet Ants: This ritual is performed by the Amazon's Satere Mawé tribe, as a male rite of passage. The custom of the tribe holds that a man must prove himself when he comes of age, by wearing ceremonial gloves filled with bullet ants that are irritated to strike at the slightest touch. The ants are called so because a bite can feel as painful as a bullet-shot. The custom requires boys as young as 12 or 13 years to wear the gloves for 10 minutes.
