4: OK, but who put the map of India in the story? It is faulty, showing large parts of J&K different from the rest of India. This is a frequent problem if you download maps of India from foreign sites. To be fair, I did not find this map on 4G's web site.

6: Hardware, Software and integration are the ‘easiest’ parts of the UI project. To illustrate the ‘hard’ part –
We are around 400 families staying in one society. At the behest of a NGO, we lined up for ‘new’ voter ID cards before the last elections. All of us, carried the necessary documentation, filled in the necessary forms in Block letters and submitted the same. We were assured ‘home delivery’ of the new cards. Nothing of the kind happened. After repeated follow-up, we finally got the cards in hand a week before the elections. The cards had lots of errors – from erroneous date of birth to wrong name spellings. When contacted, the concerned person from election commission offered solace by saying “Yes – we have received lots of complaints – and ALL cards seem to have errors”! The cause actually was sheer incompetence of Data Entry operators – allegedly literate and living in a Metro – Mumbai.
Now extrapolate this to 1.2 billion residents of India! A large number of the population is illiterate and can only communicate in their mother tongue. Even assuming that the country manages to find competent Data Entry personnel across the length and breadth of India, these people would be in no position to check accuracy of their data leading to the Unique Identification. Erroneous base data would lead to insurmountable problems for them later – not to mention a scope for fraud – like current fake ration cards.
The UIDAI should also clarify at this stage itself how they plan to overcome this at this stage – before splurging public funds.
If they can’t, then this will end up as yet another ill designed ‘showcase’ project – like the Mumbai Metro Rail.
