A rags to riches story of two techie brothers
Bangalore: From the humble environs of the village in which they were born to the sophisticated corporate world, successfully breaking the shackles of poverty that ruined the mirth of their boyhood, the two brothers - Kumar Srinivasan as the General Manager, Vice President of Technology and Head of Amazon Bangalore Center and Kalyan Raman as the CEO of Global Scholar - today reign the corporate world.

The Cost of Being Poor
On Diwali morning in 1987 Kumar Srinivasan woke up just as he did every day. His biggest Diwali gift was waiting for him. "My brother gave me Rs. 10 and he was budgeting this for the last 3 months," recalls Kumar.
With no breakfast, he used to walk 10-12 kms everyday to go to school. Luckily for him, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.G. Ramachandran had introduced Midday Meal Scheme for school children in the state. "That's why my mom always voted for MGR's party," quips Kumar. While he looked forward to the much-needed meal-sambar bath with a few pieces of carrot and tomato, Kumar would stay back after all students had left to wash the vessels. This would earn him an extra plate of meal, which he promptly packed and brought home. Sometime he would give it to his younger brother in whose school the scheme was yet to be introduced, and sometimes the morsel of food would be lunch for his sister next day. His childhood memories still bear the imprints of a household bonded by the pressures of poverty.
Kumar's family lived in such abject poverty that they reached a point when they had nothing left in the house that could be sold to meet the next day's expenses. It was then that his mother decided to sell the only ceiling fan left in the house. Selling the fan would buy them food for another one full week. "The situation was so miserable that I remember my mother selling our stainless steel plates, in which we would eat, for 50 paise," narrates Kumar.
"I still remember passing down the clothes to my younger brothers. The trousers that the youngest one used to wear to go to school had more white patches on it than its original blue color because of the stitches," nostalgically says Kumar's elder brother Kalyan Raman (Kal). His energy and passion are very obvious in his words. And it is this energy and passion that were a common trait amongst all the siblings. He says, "We never felt we were poor. Even though we weren't all that happy, we were peaceful because we always lived on hope. The beauty of hope is that when you have nothing else left to lean upon, you get used to be peaceful. You wait for miracles to happen. Waiting for miracles helps remain hopeful," says Kal.
Their mother made a bold call early on saying, "I want every kid to be educated to the best of their abilities. Nobody is going to discontinue education and take a job for a short term gain. If we have to suffer for a few years, so be it." Many of their relatives thought otherwise. They saw no need for all the kids to go to school. Her stubbornness to send children to school only meant that relatives would stop helping. It didn't matter much to her.
Later on in life, Kal steps into Anna University. Best students from elite schools across the state used to come there to study, and here was a kid from the village trying to compete with them. "It was not daunting, but it was exciting to me," says Kal. However, it was not a happy sign to see his classmates coming to college on bicycles, bikes, or cars. Some were wearing double bull shirts and the latest branded jeans or shoes out in the market. Kal couldn't get the money to buy or do whatever he wanted. "I struggled," he notes.
While he was in Anna University, like other hostel students, he would need money for his basic expenses. A postman would come to the hostel block during lunch break, sit in a prominent place and read out names of students who had received money orders from their parents. "Senthil...Rs 500; Arasu...Rs 200; Chandra...Rs 1,000; Selvam; and so on." The students would walk up, collect the money, and tip the postman with Rs 5 or 10, as they pleased. The postman would never ever call out 'Kalyan Raman'. After the roll call, as the happy students dispersed, the postman would silently walk up to Kal and handover the Rs. 2.50 money order his mother would have sent with love. "Receiving such a meager amount would look bad for an engineering student. The postman was so thoughtful that he would not call my name as it would hurt my self respect. Even if I offered 25 paise as a friendly tip he would not accept it," recalls Kal. The thoughtful postman would only pat on his back and say, "Kalyan, study well." But the money order his mother sent him reminded Kal of a number of things and kindled his spirits, and perhaps was one of the main reasons behind what Kal has achieved today.

9: I had the pleasure of working with not just
these two but all the three brothers Kal
Kumar and Sarvana. And I agree with True
Indian Kal Raman without a doubt is a super
star and an intelligent human being. However
its a different story with the two brothers
Kumar and Sarvana who merely seemed to ride
on Kal's coat tails... In fact the two
brothers had an army of friends of their own
who followed them to these different
companies. So it was like a Pied Piper
situation of sorts... When Kal moved from
Wal-mart to Blockbuster to Drugstore his
brothers followed and so did their entourage.
I do agree with Kiran Babu that you can only
take the horse to the water and can't make it
drink. However the biggest challenge is to
be taken to the water. Not many have the
opportunity to be hired by big US Corps as
easily as Kumar and Sarvana did because of
their smart and wonderful brother and his
wielding influence. Most of us Indians are
driven and are hard working anyway but not
all of us have the opportunity to get our
foot in the door. Where in the US can you
find department team meetings happening in
Tamil, the language of the brothers. I have
seen Sarvana talk in crass tamil belittling
the fellow non Indian employees or non Tamil
employees. The meetings were more like
ennada machi types... I have heard non
Indian employees complain that they don't
understand the conversation during the
meetings and the tamil entourage laughing at
them. Its like the brothers owned the floor
of the company because they had strength in
numbers. Kal was never ever like that. He
was always super professional
But long and short I am happy for a fellow Indian has made it this far and my hats off to Kal... the King

10: Mr. True Indian,
I wish it was that easy. It is not like Hutch - Wherever you go network follows. One can take you to the pond. But you got to drink the water. Only if he performs he can go up the ladder too. Let's not forget what the younger one did. He had to perform - all these companies - Walmart, Travelocity, Blockbuster or Amazon are great companies. One cannot survive just because one's brother is there.

13: Great story to read regarding teh brothers'
achievements and wishes for further
success!
The cynic in me looks at the younger brother's career with a bit of suspicion as he seems to land jobs where his elder brother is having a senior role. Maybe, the elder brother is roping in him and providing the break.
Anyways, wishing you more success!

interesting story . It can be a good example
for millions of South Asian children who are
studying now. I wish to admire the mother who
could not only give much wanted formal
education to them but also true moral
teaching . You Great Mom like mine. I salute
you.You made what you wanted. I wish to thank
the two brothers who seem to be very obedient
to mother's call. Its so sweet to know Kalyan
washed the big meal pot to fetch another
plate of meal. This is the instinct which took
them to success.

seems to have just been succeeded because of
his brother. He worked everywhere he did.
Without his brother Kal's help he would have
had little to no career so he should be
humble and not act too proud and appreciate
people's background without the lenses of his
experience..

people not loose hope while poverty stucks",
rather it is a call for everyone to look back
how they are in the present( fed by parents
comfortably, browsing news, bloging crap,
chatting online, and a little effort to
realize their dreams) to keep their full
effort,hope and concentration on achieving
their dreams

35: I must thank Silicon india for publishing
such a wonderful real life story of two of
India's,South India's and Tamilnadu's great
sons.In today's hightech and digital- divide
world where the poor and less fortunate
particularly in rural India feel alienated,
diffident and develop a sense of low
esteem,this article carrying the amazing
success story of 2 brothers who could get
over economic handicaps and achieve
remarkable success should act as morale
booster to such less fortunate children. The
role played by the mother of the two brothers
proves the truth in Saint Thiruvalluar's
couplet
" eendra pozhuthin peruthu uvakkum than makanai chandron ena ketta thai".
ie.Any mother will feel happy when her son is born. But greater happiness will be hers when she hears her son is a worthy person.
The mother of the 2 brothers must feel doubly happier, because she has heard not one son,but two of her sons are more than worthy citizens of this great land.
I am proud to be an Indian and a Tamilian on hearing the story of my two fellow Indians and Tamilians.
The story of the 2 brothers must drive home the truth in the
saying that with hard work one can succeed in life, no matter whatever may be the handicap.Only in dictionary the word 'success' comes before 'work'.In real life it is always the other way round.

36: This is a kind of Moral study which is
taught in good schools as most of the
schools miss it as a subject, which can make
a person a better humanbeing.This message is
for all the people indulged in bad politics
which is very much prevalent everywhere &
that ofcourse limits the growth of an
individual not only in the success ladder but
also as a good person which they dont
realise. As remember the fact, we all are
mortal & what you sow that you reap....so
work hard give space to people who are
struggling for their survival & growth.
Trust Me ..that is going to add to your peace
& satisfaction.....its for the people
whom i can reach and i know, very few of us
had faced those hard facts of life which
these two brothers faced & made it ..So
think yourself as a blessed individual and
stop hurting others and give space to the
world as each individual needs space .
Thankyou.
Thankyou.

Kal & Kumar have proved it once again. Circumstances do not make a man, but a man makes his own world and creates circumstances.
In this world where people crave for opportunities and not being provided a reservation for education and employment, Kal and Kumar have done it with out support of any agency or community.
That's why I must say they belong to a community which leads the world. Community of "Hard Workers". As Upanishads said and re-enforced in to Indian’s brains by mahatma Gandhi, Satyameva Jayate, Shrama yewa Jayate.
There is a saying in Telugu, 'Krushi to Nasti Durbhiksham' means "with heart full efforts every thing can be achieved'.
Good going Kal & Kumar. You have not only shown us a way to follow, but you had set up some mile stones for us.

having quite good academic records than a
person belongs to reserved category wont get
seat because of this system and because of
this all talented people started migrating to
other countries where there talent is
recognized. If there is no reservation and all
people are getting the same facility as every
one is getting and entire process is based on
Merit System then we can see India can
improve very rapidly...Hope I am at correct
side....

61: Excellent story of grit, determination and
never say die. Kalyan and Sreenivas,I am
working with rural weavers who are all below
the poverty line number holders.Through my
own initiative I HAVE PERHAPS secured the
education of 34 children of 16 such families
by assuring the women folk of these families,
incomes of only Rs 2500/- per month. The
future of India lies in more stories like
you. May be you can help our group too.
Thanks.

63: Really Brought Tears to my eyes. Hats off to
the Strong and determined Mother who despite
all odds decided to educate her sons so that
they can have better lives.(and son's did her
proud). India needs to have more mother's

prosperous

64: A very good inspiration came out of this.I
remember the story of Steve Balmar who wish
to walk several miles to get a good food at
ISCON in US.And now we can see how his ideas
made Apple Inc to grow rapidly.Every people
knows about his innovations at Apple...So
"whatever happens keep working hard one day
that will give you great results"...

66: Tears rolled out. This story had to be
reached to all the youngsters especially from
6th onwards to achieve their goal and to
teach them everything is possible to achieve
if you have the inspiraion. My sincere wish -
All the best to you both- and do have your
mother with you to reach greater goals. "I
see God exist here".

67: Inspiring indeed. A man was crying because he
had no shoes...he cried until he saw a man
with no legs. I believe I am the happiest
person on earth. Every morning when I wake up
I think about the power of my existence. I
had a similar stint in life but today i am
working in one of the reputed organisation of
the country. But then my story doesn't end
here. I still have miles to go before I
sleep...

68: it is inspiring...i too share a similar story
may be not as much these leaders have gone
thru either in poor or prosperity..but
beleived always the determination to achieve
and strive continuously for making a dream is
what makes the difference than the resources
or oppurtunities on hand...one need to have
the WANT to win...not the need of things for
an ideal situations...if you have that pure
want all the things we need will fall in
place.

69: Dear Critic, I do not think they are trying
to compete with others like L&T or Obama.
I agree it is just another story. The
learning is Poor man's son need not be poor
man and the other way round as well. Let us
take this positively and do not
politicize.
Congratulations Brothers.
Congratulations Brothers.

70: Three points from my side
- when you are in bad condition think there is somebody who is in worse condition than you. So you control your pessimism.
- when you are in good condition think that there is somebody better than you and you need to achieve. so u control your ego
- If you want to be something first think you can and also give ur 100% nature will make sure you achieve it.

learnt one thing from the above story,,,,,,

80: This was very inspiring. The important lesson
is that success does not depend on the amount
of money that one has. I am sure the two
brothers might be doing their bit to return
to the society some of the fruits of their
success.

81: Dear Sir,
This information must be published in the newspaper / magazines through which it reach a large audience rather than website. It should reach the poor people who stop the education of their children for want of money.

84: so who did the two brothers know in
SiliconIndia.com to get their article
feature?
There are so many cases like this, worse than this even. Besides, it is not like the two brothers have reached the peak.
its ok. i am always cynical. congratulations to the two brothers and do hope that such articles appear frequently to motivate a lot of people out in there in the world.
Read the history of Larsen & Toubro. Thats what I call a
real struggle to win.
In fact, history of Barack Obama. He has achieved what no one has achieved before and something that would not have been imagined 8 years ago.
