Bharti Airtel to launch internet TV soon

Kolkata: Bharti Airtel, which has already started a trial run of its proposed internet protocol television (IPTV) services in New Delhi, is planning its commercial launch in six cities soon, a top official said here Monday.
"We are currently covering 1,000 households in New Delhi on a pilot basis. Issues like infrastructure capabilities and different pricing models are being tried there," Atul Bindal, president of Telemedia Services of the company, told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Airtel's direct-to-home (DTH) service in Kolkata.
As IPTV service would require high speed broadband connection, Airtel would restrict itself to metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, where the broadband speed is 8 mbps (mega byte per second).
IPTV service essentially carries broadcast content over the internet.
However, Bindal refused to divulge the date of the IPTV launch.
"We will soon be having services like IPTV, DTH, landline telephone and mobile telephony. Various combo packages are being worked out," he said.
For IPTV services, Airtel is eyeing its 2.5 million Telemedia customers, both landline and broadband users.
The recent issue of guidelines for downloading IPTV content by the information and broadcasting ministry has prodded the company to aggressively work on its IPTV service launch, Bindal said.

1: Mr Guru, the thing to note here is that IPTV
would require high bandwidth only between the
Airtel IPTV control center and people's home
- something called the "last mile". The
bandwidth we are using to access the internet
is the more expensive part because as an ISP,
they need bandwidth from international
providers or take their own section in the
undersea cables. The last mile is always able
to carry a lot more than just your internet
bandwidth and is limited only by the
infrastructure/hardware available in the
local city network where these IPTV control
center may be located. In other words, you
could be doing a 10 MB IPTV connection and
continue using 256 kbps cap for you internet
connection on the same line. Google for
"Triple Play" to know more.

2: Right now every one of the broadband
connection comes with a bandwidth cap. If one
should be watching the TV content over the
internet, think about the bandwidth one would
require - believe me its huge and how much
one need to pay for availing the service and
for the bandwidth. I wont be surprised if we
have to end up paying more than 3K per month
for this. Instead it would be cheaper to
think about SAT TVs at least till the time
the broadband comes down in price.
