Infrastructure woes drive away IIT students from classes

Mumbai: Infrastructure woes are driving away students from attending classes in the Indian Institute of Technology, Rajasthan. In the midst of accommodation adjustments in the newly established IITs the students mostly end up missing the morning classes and authorities had to face lecturers' complaints on the irregularity which was never an issue at the old IITs.

The decision of setting up six new IITs was taken this year by the HRD Ministry. Because of the swiftness of the move, the classes of three IITs are being conducted out of temporary premises, while the other three new institutes are functioning out of existing IIT campuses. And in Kanpur, students of IIT-Rajasthan have been accommodated in housing meant for faculty members. About eight to 10 of them have been put up in one house, which has one common shower area.

As reported in Times of India one of the students said, "Each day, there is an argument about who will get up earliest. So there were a lot of adjustments to make initially. Students of IIT-Kanpur, on the other hand, who are also on the same campus, do not have to make such adjustments. We are waiting to move into the Rajasthan campus". Students have now decided to come up with a separate timetable for using the shower areas in the halls of residence. However, some faculty members said students were not getting up on time, and, hence, were late for class. But students refuted it saying they were forced to be up hours before class as many of them had been stuffed into one room.

As the lack of attendance is taking its peak, the regulators are now forced to issue notices reading, "It was brought to the notice of the undersigned that there has been unwarranted deviation in adherence of lectures/ tutorials/ lab sessions schedule by students." Infact, Sanjay Dhande, IIT-Kanpur director and the in-charge head for IIT-Rajasthan, has now asked all instructors to maintain data of "irregular attendance of students", a move never taken by IIT Kanpur in its entire history.

1 I AM A STUDENT OF IIT RAJASTHAN AND I WANT TO TELL YOU THAT ALL THIS CRAP IS
WRONG.THIS PERSON WHO HAS MANUPILATED THINGS TO GAIN SOME PUBLICITY IS WRONG.WE
HAVE MUCH HIGHER ATTENDANCE THAN ANY OF THE IIT .THE MOVE FOR ATTENDANCE IS
TAKEN BECAUSE WE ARE PIONEERS AND PEOPLE WANTS THAT WE SET EXAMPELS FOR NEW
INSTITUION.WHY THIS PERSON DOESN'T TELL YOU THAT WE ARE PERFORMING BETTER IN
OUR STUDIES.AS IN ANOTHER COMMENT IITK STUDENT TELLS U THAT THAY ALSO GET
SIMILAR INFRASTRUCTURE AND THEY ALSO HAVE MUCH LESSER ATTANDANCE THAN US.
I MUST TELL THE WRITER TO FIRST OBSERVE THE THINGS AND THAN WRITE SOMETHING.

2 ultimate daya of hrd
what was the bigger puporse behind this move (of creating new IITs) ?
is the purpose being served (or will it be served when infrastructure comes) ?
when infra was not there how the project was approved ?
who is responsible for ruining the future of so many supposedly(and mostly they
are) bright students of india ?
Is the person of group of persons who took and made others execute this decision
will get the benefit they were hoping for ?
why was it necessary to open even more iit s just after few years of nits ,,,,
is there some better justification ? if its only to please junta then name all
Govt collges iit (no distinction .. nothing) ( no offence to any one except hrd
as that is intentional) ?

And moreover in india there are so many academicians and educationalists .. does
nebody hear them.. are they given sufficient weightage ? why such stupid
decision are taken!

As it would be one irreversible decision, What is our responsibility now ?

3 We in IIT Kanpur also have 4 showers among a wing of 22 people but out
of 4 only 2 work. We never had such kind of problems. Less number of showers can
never be a reason for absenteeism!

"all instructors to maintain data of "irregular attendance of students", a move
never taken by IIT Kanpur in its entire history."---- This is never a new thing
for IITK. Even we do not attend classes as the real reason is that 90% of us do
not follow what is going on in the classes because of the brilliant teaching
skills of the Professors here.

4 Mr Sreejith, You are asked to comment only on IIT's and do not bring in any
comparison with engineering colleges (worthless engineering colleges as you
say)in TN and AP. Every engineering college havs its own standards. You may be
from IIT's but there are ppl who have studied in those engineering colleges and
are serving the nation better than you do

5 What is happening is really very unfortunate. Can anyone comment why did the HRD
ministry rush to open these new IITs this year despite the fact that the
infrastructure was missing?

6 I have an Idea. Let private industry install pay-for-bath stalls next to
Library. Let me price it Rs 5.00/ full bath. Half for IIT and half for industry.

Do you think that is good price?

7 My humble request to IIT students is please prefer to take jobs outside India.
India is overcrowded and its politicians are corrupt. Most of the govt runs like
a goonda raj. I have struggled 30 years trying to build a company and this f**
country can't even release a payment for a work done.
India is hijacked by babus and peons. If they can pull down Tatas, they can do
anything. In Bangalore govt signs an agreement with an NRI and when he invests,
he is struggling to complete it after even 15 years. Reason , the govt has not
given land as promised. Now after 15 years govt says that if he constructs a
highway from Banglore to Mysore then it has environmental problems( Nandi
Infrastructures Ltd).

So please do not get bogged down by nationalism. Be a better International
citizen and contribute to humanity. You will have sufficient resources to help
needy Indian fellows by serving in other advanced and developing economies.

8 I was amused to read some of the comments in this forum. People are feeling
sorry for IIT Kanpur. Perhaps I may add that the condition in IIT Kharagpur is
unknown. Whereas kanpur takes around 800(iit raj included) students, Kharagpur
is forced to absorb 1108 students (iit orissa included). Result : almost 250
students in one class ... this in turn results in people skipping classes at
will ... its not possible for the profs to take attendance nor is it possible
for a student to concentrate in a class of 250 (in some cases it is even more).
Result will be for all to see in 4/5 years from now when the current batch
passes out ... unfortunately by that time our "beloved" hrd minister may have
died - pity that he will not be able to see the fruits of his action .

(footnote : I am a student of IIT Kharagpur)

9 I guess teamwork begins from bathrooms. Even bathroom singers are no less an
achievement in a world's number two populated country India (First being China),
touching approximately 125 crores. We also know about the recent realty shows
where Shilpa Shetty had to stay in a dormitory with another actress of England
origin in London. Well such issues can be resolved amicable. We have larger
issue like India Pakistan, Kashmir borders, food fodder and agriculture,
environment, education, leadership, corruption, no of aged men more than no of
youngsters, no of pensioners more than no of working people, famines,
unemployment, class struggles, arson, riots, rapes, murders, bomb blasts,
community struggles, economic gaps, uneven distribution of power, welath, money
and essentials of life.

10 I had no idea about these new IITs to have started functioning this way!! its
better we do not simply increase the count of IITs w/o the necessary amenities
in place!!

11 This is very unfortunate, and will only dilute the quality and reputation of
IITs, and finally they will end up being the likes of engineers coming from the
hordes of obscure and worthless engineering colleges like lakshmi or parvati
engineering colleges, found in TN and AP and other southern states..

12 such worse problems.. and what do the authorities want??? a stinking
environment????
