E-cigarette to promote smoke free environment
By    siliconindia news bureau
Thursday, October 2, 2008
Mumbai: Electronic-cigarettes have found their way into the Indian market after the Union Minister's move to ban public smoking of cigarettes. These e-cigarettes are posed as cigarette-alternatives or smoking-alternatives.

Priced at Rs 1,000, the e-cigarette is a look alike of a standard cigarette and is also held the same way but has no tobacco or smoke. Instead, it contains a high-tech silicon chip, an atomizing chamber and lithium batteries, and other micro-electronic components.According to Business Line, the diluted nicotine gets vaporized to give the smoker his smoke and satisfaction.

The product falls in the regulatory gap between a tobacco product and a tobacco-cessation product, say health-workers from India, the UK and the US, where similar products are being sold over the last several months.

However, anti-tobacco advocacy workers are not quite impressed by the product as it has come when the center is to ban public smoking from October 2. Chennai-based SPK Consumer Solutions, in collaboration with an undisclosed overseas company, is selling the product in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

The e-cigarette is being sold as an alternative to smoking and a quit-smoking device. The quitters'pack is Rs 3,600, where the smoker can gradually decrease the quantity of nicotine he inhales, till he quits.
On the other hand, the World Health Organisation, warns electronic cigarettes are not safe and effective anti-smoking therapies, as there is inadequate scientific evidence.

Among the e-cigarettes sold overseas is Ruyan E-cigarette from Ruyan America Inc, a US-based joint venture partner of Ruyan Holdings Ltd of Hong Kong. There are 35 manufacturers of e-cigarettes, say health workers, and 60 per cent are from China.

2 You have mentioned the price is very high, According to Indian population there
are some 85 % of population are addicted with cigar where as our poverty line,
you know better than me. most of the rich people can survive them self with
there moneypower so there is no difference to them if it is electronic or real
tobacco cigar. You should concentrate to the poor people those who are addicted
with such tobacco cigar. If the electronic cigar is less cost to tobacco cigar
then its really helpful to our INDIA.

6 http://www.electroniccigarette.in/whatissuper.asp

this is snake oil marketing at it's best. there is no proof of it's efficacy in
helping stop the smoker from smoking real cigarettes. in fact the e-cigarette
may help in promoting the discreet consumption of banned substances without the
side effect of passive smoking. this is not recommended by WHO and is possibly
the only way to 'smoke' in an air conditioned airplane during long flights.
jittery and nervous addicts now stand a chance to calm their nerves by a high
impact direct shot of nicotine in its vaporous form

7 It is said the E Cigars have lithium batteries, radiation from these batteries
are equally armful to human beings like tobocco.

8 For developed nations, it is allright. Instead of wasting the time and money to
develop such technologies, try to develop firm determination to leave such bad
habits. For india, its a bad idea. This is my personnal opinion.

9 Dear All,

In my opinion its a good attempt. For those people who are addict
of this bad habbit & can't quit smoking immediatly. It will help those people to
inhale less quantity of nicotine. Gradually, one day they will get free of this
bad habbit. one day we will find our country smoking free.

BEST OF LUCK

Thanks & Regards

13 I think its surely a good move. Many players are there in the indian market
marketing these products. I have taken one from spk marketing services, chennai.
Its sold at 3600 INR. The package contains 50 cartridges which contain 15 High
nicotine content cartridges, 15 medium, 10 low and 5 zero nicotine content
cartridges. It contains a cartridge, atomizer , charger. Please log on to
www.electroniccigarette.com or call in at . They send the package by courier.
There are also counselling sessions which i am yet to receive. It's surely a
good one step ahead to quit smoking.
