Kendrapada (Orissa): At least eight persons, including a female software engineer, have been booked in Orissa for cheating a non resident Indian (NRI) of Rs.1.3 million by making false promises, the police said Thursday.
"The police have registered criminal cases against software engineer Kaveri Patra, a resident of Mulabasanta village in Kendrapada district, and seven others including her father, husband and father-in-law on the charge of cheating and committing a cyber crime," officer in charge of the local software engineer Kaveri Patra, told IANS.
Jitendra Kumar Nayak, 27, a native of Ainipara village, located at a distance of about 35 km from Mulabasanta village in the same district, said he had been working in Dubai since 2003 and registered with a leading matrimonial site to find a life partner.
He received marriage proposals from several girls and after evaluating them, zeroed in on Kaveri Patra, 25. Kaveri was working with an IT firm in Kolkata.
The two became friends around June last year and exchanged many e-mails subsequently.
Jitendra alleged that during their friendship Kaveri urged him to pay for her father's heart surgery, her mother's treatment and also asked for money to start a new college in her village. She got funds from him regularly and assured him that she would return the money soon, he said.
In her e-mails, Kaveri would allegedly request him to send money in her name as well as her company associates' names through online money transfer agencies like Western Union, UAE Exchange and State Bank Core Banking.
In this manner, Jitendra claims to have given Rs 1.3 million to Kaveri till October 21, 2007. Though she promised to repay the money within two months, she is yet to repay even a single paisa, Jitendra alleged in his complaint.
Jitendra further alleged that Kaveri married someone else, in January this year - something he found out through his contacts in Orissa. Both Kaveri and her husband are now working in Kolkata, he claimed.
Police booked Kaveri and her relatives Wednesday after the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) recently directed the state government and local administration to submit a detailed report within a month to NHRC about the cyber crime.
The district headquarter of Kendrapada is located at the distance of about 150 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

1: This is just an updateâ¦I just learnt
that as the police and crime branch closes in
on the alleged cyber fraudi , she is trying
to run away from the country but was stopped
at some foreign missions in India. At least
Indian police are doing some good and people
are paying some attention. I know this woman
and let me tell you her manners r really
smooth and seem to be very sophisticated and
polished. This is the best example of the age
old adage All that glitters is not GOLDâ¦
The poor NRI guy is not the sole
victim...there r couple of more unfortunate
guys fallen prey to this lady. Alas Watch out
people..u may be be the Next...Judging people
was not that difficult before.

5: Could be a case of grapes going sour. I am
fail to see anyone parting that kind of money
without any understanding. I even further
fail to understand... if he could send such
amount of money.. Why he could not simply
take a flight down to India. I guess he is an
Indian.. And did not need any visa or
anything.. hmmmmmm... can anyone smell
anything fishy...

6: what kaveri did many men do it to women and
it is taken as 'normal' - 'men will be men'
kind of instance. Kaveri must be treated just
as any other man would be treated. If any
investigation is required then it is on
mr.jitendra - it is rather strange that
mr.Jitendra parted with such a large amount
in such a short period of time.
If any harsh action needs to be taken it is on commentators like nanda (commented on friday, September 12 2008. whose thinking is still so degenerate as can be seen in his comment below. It is this kind of thinking that make sthis world an intolerable place for future generations of women.
