By Vimali Swamy,Wednesday, 10 September 2008, 05:55 Hrs
Bangalore: Over 250 techies came together in Bangalore to get a deep insight of Adobe applications at the Adobe RIA Developer Summit 2008 that kick started today. A two day event, the Summit is focused on offering a unique opportunity to designers and developers to gain insights into the design and development of rich internet applications (RIAs).
Is social media more addictive than cigarettes?
YES
NO

The Summit began with a keynote from Ben Forta, Director - Evangelism, and Michele Turner, VP - Platform, on the impact of RIAs. "Adobe revolutionizes how the world engages with ideas and information. With the advent of web 2.0, Adobe's RIA platform - powered by the ubiquitous Flash Player & Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) has become the technology of choice for delivering compelling user experiences across browsers, desktops and devices. From financial services to media & entertainment, major players in the industry rely upon Adobe Flex to deliver next generation experiences, be it a consumer Internet application or an enterprise application," said Forta.

During his talk, Forta gave a demo of the mashups that developers could build on Adobe AIR. From viewing sales reports to watching videos and listening to audios to getting latest news or bidding on eBay, one can get a better user experience on ones desktop from Adobe Air as compared to web browser. "With AIR we have integrated desktop and web based applications to give a rich user experience and real time information update that would be available when both online and offline," he said.

"Flash Player, today is the most downloaded application in the industry; reflecting the penetration of Adobe products amongst the developers. Now we plan to take flash to mobile too," Michelle said while talking about the Open Screen Project. Adobe started this project about six months back in order to encourage developers to develop RIAs for mobile devices using Flash and Adobe Air. "The idea is to develop RIAs for mobile devices that can be seamlessly used in various devices irrespective of the operating system they support," she added. To promote the project, Adobe has been working with its partners like ARM, Cisco, Intel, Nokia, Comcast, MTV Networks, NBC-Universal, Qualcomm and Sony Ericsson to name a few.

She also announced about Adobe MAX, a global event that presents a unique opportunity to connect with thousands of designers, developers, partners, executives, and Adobe staff for education, inspiration, and community. Beginning on November 16 in San Francisco this year, MAX will be held in Milan, and Tokyo over next few months. It also likely to be held in India later next year.

Over the next two days, many experts will conduct sessions where the developers will learn about developing RIAs with the help of Flex and other Adobe applications. Attendees can also interact with the Flex team and learn how to get that "killer look" for the application that one always dreamed off. Adobe also plans to treat all the attendees by giving away Adobe Flex Builder 3 for free at the end of the summit.
