New Delhi: Wipro Technologies, an IT solution firm, is screening around 2,400-3000 employees (4-5 percent of the total workforce) on the grounds of non-performance. According to sources, around 1000 employees are being given the pink slips, while about 2000 are allowed to move on.
As per a report in The Economic Times, the company will provide some of the employees with counseling for boosting up their performance. Pratik Kumar, Wipro's Corporate VP (human resources), confirming the move, said, "It's a regular annual exercise. As the appraisal cycle gets over, a multi-layer review happens. Following that, people who have fallen in the lower quadrants of performance are put on watch. Some are asked to pull up and others are asked to move on." It includes all the 60,000 global IT services employees from the senior leadership team down to the person with one-year experience.
On the number of the employees who had been asked to move on, Kumar said the company did not disclose the number. But it was "significantly lower than 2,000" as company sources said about 1,000 employees were being asked to leave.
The employee base in Wipro has also come down from 62,070 to 61,345, as seen in the quarter ended June. But the company refutes it to be related to the slowdown and rather emphasizes it to be industry driven move. Kumar says, "It's not just our view, but the industry's view, that we have to be thoughtful of additions and drive productivity. We took a closer look at our hiring and realized that we did not need to hire more, since there were people on the bench."
However, the companies who have recently adopted the trend of giving off pink slips at anytime, decline it as a move to push through the slowdown era. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the country's largest IT services firm, had given pink slips to 500 non-performers. IBM, too, had asked about 700 employees in India to leave, citing non-performance. In July, Patni Computer Systems had shown the door to 400 employees.

2: TCS is the Leader when it comes to faking CVs
presented to International Clients.They show
that a person who has never worked on a skill
at all say SAP to have worked 6 to 7 years,
present those fake CVs to the client and get
projects. Its time this truth was brought out
to international clients who are paying for
fraud companies!Ratan Tata,genuineness begins

4: This is a dastardly act which is taking place
in Wipro,HCL and other companies which have
no human values. If a person resigns by
himself they would have to pay him 3 months
notice. But if they force an employee to
resign, they need not pay him any notice as he
is at their mercy. For example, there is a PM
in Wipro by name Satya Prakash Akella, who
has been responsible for kicking out around
500 employees from his team of Microsoft
project at Wipro. That too without giving them
any notice! This shows the Cheap and low
thinking of its founders!Fellow Indians, I
call upon you all to fight for your
rights.File a case in court.You are entitled
to it.Please do not to join these companies
when the economy picks up.This is our way to
retaliate.Lets come together everybody and
form a union so that together we can fight
for our rights

5: I wish to put forth my opinion on the current
employment situation. I am a mech engineer
worked for 10 yrs in an auto component
industry and for the last 5 yrs in IT firm .
I am in a fairly senior position now. Why
pink slips are common only in IT firms,
although automobile industry is much affected
and even big industries are in loss, why they
are not sending their persons out. Don't they
have ineffecient persons. We have to think.
Performance appraisal are all bullshit. In
engg industry, if some persons are not
producing result, they analyse the
oppurtunities given to him and try to improve
him. Sacking is just not imaginable. During
recruitment, IT firms finish recruitment in
few days, whereas Engg firms have good robust
system and only after qualifying, they are
recruited. After recruitment, it becomes the
responsibility of the firm to utilise them
properly. Who prevent HR persons in IT to go
deep in selection process. I strongly feel we
need to have union. General feeling is that
union is detrimental to progress. It is not
so. No body can give result in an uncertain
environment. With union there will be freedom
of expression. See the great companies like
Toyota. They have very strong union and that
is their strength. Although now it is too
premature to think of union in IT industry,
this is right period to moot the idea of
union, so that atleast in future, our
youngsters will have a peaceful career.

6: I do not think what happened recently,
anybody will recommend to join in WIPRO. You
will do campus interview. PPL will get
selected and happy that got offer from a good
company. And you will say that join BPO or
wait. If you join BPO then if there is any
technical requirement after 6 months also,
you cannot join. After 18 months you will be.
Already 1 yrs gone, do you want ppl to wait
for you indefinitely. Shame on YOU Premji.
