CEOs of sick PSUs to get fat pay hikes!
By    siliconindia news bureau
Friday, September 5, 2008
New Delhi: CEOs of sick public sector units (PSUs) are all set to receive huge pay hikes! Though the move by the government may look funny, the idea behind is to retain them and offer additional incentives for turning around the sick companies. Extension of tenure, post-retirement medical benefits and additional gratuity are also being considered.

A report by The Economic Times says that the second PSU pay revision committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge M Jagannadha Rao, made a strong case for increasing the salary of PSU employees and put them at par with their private sector counterparts, who obviously take home more pay than the formers.

"We have earlier suggested the department of public enterprises for giving extra benefits to the CEOs of sick PSUs. This move will not only help getting better professionals for running sick companies but also retain performing CEOs," said an official from Board of Reconstruction of Public Enterprises (BRPSE). "The profit making PSUs get their due share sooner than later, however, it is pertinent that there should be extra incentive for loss-making PSUs also," the official added.

Other soaps included in the proposal are longer tenures and extension of retirement age beyond 60 years of age. Currently, a PSU CEO's tenure is of five years and the retirement age is 60. "If the CEO is performing well and which is visible in the company's result, a tenure extension can be granted even if the CEO has reached the retirement age," a government official said. Currently, the CMD of a navratna company gets a salary of around Rs 10 lakh along with other benefits.

The second pay revision committee has recommended that variable pay or performance-related pay (PRP) should be made an integral part of the compensation package which should be directly linked to the profits of the CPSE.

1 It is tru that the sick PSU companies have beome sick due to policies of the
politician based Government. The PSU have played an immense role in creating
modern india inspite of private compaies.Infrastructure has been developed by
PSUs and not by private companies. The CEO or CMD is being appointed by the
Government and they are not expert business proffessioals. They are being
appointed on the basis of thier politic arrangements OR aproach.EVERY Industry
should have professional vision rich CEOs and if the PSUs gets sick the reason
behind is working of THE CEO appointed by the Govt. Then why the normal should
suffer for the mistakes made by others.the Employees of a sick unit are not
responosible for any failure of a PSU.the benefit of any pay commission should
also reach to the all PSU employees since they all are indian and provide their
services to the country as same as provided by the other service department. The
policy of the GOI is not proper and deprives the right of pay packets suggested
for the other GOI departments which may stop migration of intellectuals from
PSUs.

2 Its a SICK idea, if it is a fixed component which gets added to the pay cheque,
which is already a liabilty to the nation's economy. But a GREAT idea if it is
performance based. Probably the country would see a few more turnaround
specialists!

3 It is the Government (Politicians Vested Interest) Policies,Procedures which
makes a PSU Sick, Not its PEOPLE. See what happened to Tata's at Singur because
of Mamta. Oil companies are not free to decide its Product's Price. NTPC is not
free to decide its Energy Prices. Tell me, "Can you run a Private Company for a
single day in such environment, if you are made CEO of that company, without
making it SICK or closing the unit?" People everywhere( Public or Private) are
same i.e. INDIANS. As i see in particular Private companies are wasting more
resources and earn more only because of MONOPOLY leaving behind business ETHICS.

4 Why not to link the pay packet with the performance of CEO's from day-1.

5 First you have incompetent CEOs who make the PSU sick. Then you give them fat
salary hikes to stay in their jobs.

Jagannadha Rao needs to introspect - professionally !

6 Well the idea of pay and perks hike is some what wecome, fix revenue targets to
the CEO,s of PSUs to achieve, as most of them are alergic to result/revenue
oriented performance. If ths is not taken care of and implemented, you will find
the sick PSU's will move to ICUs? and the CEO's will become sick.
