Rural job scheme working well, says Ahluwalia
By    IANS
Monday, September 1, 2008
New Delhi: Indian Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia Monday said the national rural employment guarantee (NREG) scheme was doing extremely well.

"In totality, NREG scheme is doing extremely well. It is generating three times more employment than all other schemes together used to do in rural areas," Ahulwalia told reporters on the sidelines of a book release function.

He said the scheme is working quite effectively in majority of the states, but "effectiveness varies from place to place".

Ahluwalia also lauded the scheme, saying it had less leakage and more transparency.

Regarding inflation, Ahluwalia said it would moderate to single digit by the end of the current fiscal.

"I do visualise that inflation in single digits by the end of the current fiscal," he said.

Ahluwalia attributed his optimism to higher growth rate in agriculture, which he said would grow at three percent in the current fiscal, declining prices of commodities in the global market, and administrative and monetary methods that the government has taken.

Ahluwalia released a book titled, "Corporate Social Responsibility in India: Past Present and Future" written by Indian Administrative Service officer S.K. Panda.
