IITs urge PM for exemption from caste quota in faculty

New Delhi:All the 13 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to exempt them from having to implement quota in their faculty, drawing parallels with the government departments of atomic energy and space science.
"All the IITs want formal exemption from implementing quota in appointment of faculty, like in the space and atomic energy departments," IIT-Guwahati director Gautam Barua told IANS by phone.
"Since the last 46 years, both the above departments have been exempted from quota in the appointment of scientists and we were in the same bracket too till recently," Barua said.
"But since it has been pointed out that the IITs are not immune to faculty reservation, I personally conveyed to the prime minister today about the problem," Barua added. "We want the government to formally announce exemption to us for better educational quality at the IITs."
The human resource development (HRD) ministry directed the IITs in June to implement the 27 percent quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15 percent for Scheduled Castes and 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribes in their faculty.
The decision came after the 27 percent quota for students was implemented, albeit partially, in all central government-aided higher educational institutes this year.
When the direction for implementing quota in faculty was passed on to the IITs, the premier engineering institutes expressed their displeasure by holding protests on the campuses.
At least three IITs, including IIT-Delhi, held candlelight marches to express their dissent over the HRD ministry direction.
"The sanctity of the IITs needs to be preserved to ensure quality education," Barua said, adding, "There is no discrimination or groupism within the IITs. We need to preserve this character."
Barua said he had personally told the prime minister about the issue when he visited the campus Tuesday and was given the assurance that it would be discussed with his cabinet colleagues.
"He assured that he would take up the case in the cabinet and the IIT standing committee would also take note of it," the professor said quoting Manmohan Singh.
The prime minister, who was at the IIT-Guwahati campus Tuesday for a function, touched upon the issue during his speech.
"The IITs have served our country with great distinction. I take note of the point that Prof. Gautam Barua has made with regard to the reservation issue. I take that with me and will bring it to the notice of my cabinet colleagues," Manmohan Singh said while addressing the students and professors there.

Whats wrong if backward classes become the faculty of IITs under reservation, do
they are not citizen of India. In my opinion merit is only race not qualifying
parameter. And reservation is a matter of regulating opportunity through all
casts/communities. So nobody should feel it wrong. We should either finish cast
system by doing intercaste marriages or approve reservations. Otherwise we will
never be united as a nation. Population, poverty and terrorists are the main
issues in front of India. Those are getting personal harm due to reservation
are well equipped to do business, etc. Its sacrifice they are doing for the
betterment of India and they should feel pride for it.

Guys we have always blamed politicians for quota, it is true that they are
responsible but don't you think that the section of society for whom this quota
is made should also share some blame. Its they who have to come forward and say
that after 61 years of independence and prefrrred treatment we are now not
"backword" we are now not "dalit" . I think after 61 years of quota regime still
continuing it is just a mockery of capability of an Indian citizen. So now it is
time for those citizens of India for whom quota has been made to stand up and
refuse it in the name of self respect and come to the main stream where everyong
is identified as an Indian and not Dalit, Backword, minority, etc. Lets get up
and make our identity as an Indian and tell the politicians that they cannot
divide us into segments for their own interest.

I am not surprised with the intelect of our present and past prime ministers,
MPs / MLAs and other heads of government officials who had been propogating
reservation in the name of uplifting backward classes but actually for gaining
votes of illetrates.
Schedule castes / tribes do not realize that they are systametically kept away
from the main stream and earmarked continusouly for the last 61 years as
backwards by our political leaders for their political advantages.
I request that all the politicians to have only the SC / ST / Backward doctors
for treatment to all the politicians and their family menbers and all the
SC/ST/Backward to be their assists in office as well as domestic helps. This
will set the real example how much present prime minister and other minister /
MPs / Political leaders love SC/ST/Backward people.

The ultimate in propagating discrimination and second class citizens. The
politicians of this country are allowing and in many cases pushing this for
their short term gains. This will bring the country down, create larger social
divides and fragment the country where the best will be frustrated. If more
50% of opportunities are reserved of some communities then it is not fair to the
rest. And, if you study, it is the same people in these OBC and other
communities who keep taking advantage of these reservations 1st getting in
best collages with minimal percentage, then in jobs and mandatory promotions!!
Every time a politician or a bureaucrat goes to a hospital the only people
who should be allowed to attend on them are the people who got into the medical
collage with minimal percentage, barely graduated with the degree and have been
promoted to surgeon because they belonged to certain OBC etc category Lets see
what they think of reservations after that.

We fool indians are simply sitting and looking d drama of all d
politicians..even they dont know what is IITs n IIMs.but they r making fool ..a
long back caste quota came because Neheru thought if he gives quota to some
backward classes for 5 yrs den it ll b good and den Indira Came and also she did
same thing..n no one lifted..arre indian ppls how many days u ll stay in
backward..sometimes atleast come fwd and look d candle of world...

caste quota has become a trend now a days.. c'mon give a break.. now even
faculties will have quotas.. mentors should be appointed as per their talent
part with the right knowledge.. this quota system will take a toll on many
skilled persons..
