Non-IITians pay package higher than IITians
By
siliconindia news bureau
Bangalore: Pay package offered by global companies for non-IITians surpasses the salary of those who are coming from premier IITs. It's not hard to beat the toppers of IITs in getting big offers for even an unpopular rural college graduate if he/she has talent and willingness to approach the tests undertaken by global companies.
Recently, K Prasanna, a 22 year old final year student of Kongu Engineering college, Tamilnadu has bagged a job at the Rolls-Royce, one of the major automobile manufacturers in the world with a pay package of $92,000 per year. The package received by Prasanna tops even that of IIT Madras, where the highest offer is $90,000, which was made by Schlumberger, a German oilfield services provider, reported The Economic Times.
Moreover, Prasanna is one of the two non-IITians among the 120 graduates that Rolls-Royce has selected from India. A student from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai, is the other person who achieved the same.
Prasanna said, "Of those shortlisted, only 22 are pursuing engineering. The rest of them have either completed their Masters or Doctorate and few are even working in industry." Earlier, Rolls-Royce had been recruiting about 300-700 candidates globally. Now they have extended it to 2000 candidates and decided to turn to India also for the first time.
"It is easier for IITians as they are given more liberty to specialize in their area of interest rather than attend classes regularly, whereas in Anna University, students are expected to have a minimum attendance," added Prasanna.
Earlier, Prasanna had qualified the IIT test and got selected for BTech, but he decided not to join the course, as he wanted to specialize in mechanical. He also refused to do an internship in one of the IIMs since he was not interested in management.

The number of Engg. colleges/Universities in comparison to IITs is large, and
many can not afford to go to IIT. Given this it is logical we often have better
grads from other colleges than IIT. I graduated from an Engg. college, and when
I went to masters at IIT, I was ahead of most who had graduated from IITs.

Hi all,
Top in the List should not be or need not be
in order of the instititutes, viz, mitian, iitian or nitian etc.,,
It should be dependent on
capability of the Company to pay for the best
and on the merit of the student (Whichever Univeriity he may be from
doesn't matter)
It also depends on the supply Vs demand for that year
Am I Right?

Some talented students may not get absorbed in IIT,because of family
cirumstances or by the reservation systems in premier institutes.
Certinly IIT draws a talent pull from the Indian students. But that does not mean
Rajnikant will not be paid more fees than Amitabh.

Mr Rohit,
You are absolutely correct. A person who does not think to contribute to create
'wealth' or ensure betterment for our country is of little good whatever might
be his pay-package.
One who has studied here spending tax-payers' money, and then goes and serves
another country and pays taxes there...people honor them...but why?

Whatever qualifications you might possess,
Still be sure that your main asset is you your knowledge, your strategies,
your focus, your attitude, your determination and passion, your love for the
work, and people supporting you.
Many such things are normally not imbibed from a class-room!
I had read a book LOOK BEYOND MONEY TO GROW RICH by Sumit Basu (an
engineer, manager and industrial entrepreneur for four decades) which deals with
Self-development, Soft-skills of Management and Entrepreneurship tips.
Although the book is aimed at average people (who might not have gone through
higher studies of engineering or management) this can throw considerable
insight and help every individual. At least I think I could learn quite a few
things from the book. The attitude and various other aspects make large
differences.
The book is not widely distributed, so to get a copy by VPP I had to send an
email to the publisher at: kdiwan@ubspd.com
The price of the book is 200/- or so, which might be less than what we spend for
a peg of whisky! The amount is nothing but certainly can benefit the reader
amply.
I recommend all to read this book! Dr A P J Abdul Kalam has praised the book.

Further to my previous comments, I wish to add the following:
Getting a degree from a premier institute is not all (whichever institute it
might be). A person to be amply successful has to firstly absolutely love
his/her work and be dedicated. It also requires constant hard work. Neither
becoming a balloon of ego will help nor anyone need think that a good degree
will take care of everything. Secondly one has to learn and understand various
other aspects/faculties of achieving success which are not normally taught in
any educational institute.
We all may be good engineers, but to succeed we have to nurture various other
things.

It is certain that there are other engineering and management institutes (other
than IITs & IIMs) which might be becoming better. These institutes (IITs & IIMs)
have a hyped status earned over a long period of time. But they may require
large improvements and change of thinking. Otherwise they may slowly go behind.
Many new institutes have understood this necessity and molding them accordingly.
A person has to learn which is required in the present scenario.
We were manufacturing cars for at least 60 years. But we failed miserably and
allowed car manufacturers from other countries (who did not make anything 60
years back) to flood our market! We can not imagine that none of these failed
Indian companies did not employ any of the geniuses from IITs & IIMs.
So, it might be necessary that the students actually gain some REAL-WORTH to
do something truly useful!
Another couple of important points:
If any of these institutes can teach an average student to become great then
we can appreciate more the value of the education that is imparted. When
only brilliant persons are filtered and taken, they might automatically
shine better!
And I find that the claims of high salaries abroad (for which the institutes are
too proud) are often from non-engineering field.

I dont agree with the above comment that IIT guys dont have to attend classes.
This is a misconception of the highest level. Any absence without a genuine
reason is dealt with extremely seriously, often leading to the parents of the
concerned student being called up or disciplinary proceedings being initiated
against the student. Its good that people from all across India are bagging good
job offers but i guess while making comments one should be more careful and only
verified comments should be made, no matter how ecstatic one gets.

What is good about IITian? He worked hard and got into IIT. He got rewarded to
get into India's most premier engineering institute. Best facilities and faculty
is what he gets in reward.
But that does not at all mean, that other colleges dont produce equivalent
quality engineers, as do the IITs.
If IITians stop working hard after they get into IIT, then what? They would not
get rewared in life. So everything is hardwork in this world, friends. There is
no substitute to hard-work.
If this was not true, then all the top Indian CEOs would be IITians. But
majority are non-IITians, because they chose to work hard at some time in life,
which was much after the time when one sits for engineering entrance.

It is sad that we miss out the message in the story. The message is not in the
IIT vs non-IIt. It is the dedicated effort that is rewarded irrespective of the
institution. It is not also the package that should really matter especially at
these high end ones. We in India do not need such sensational news. We need
motivation. Hope Prasanna's example provides with enough motivation.

Do you recruit students from colleges across India? Have you interviewed final
year Computer Science students from the NITs, Mesra & Pilani? Or the tier 3
colleges?
I have done so often over the years and will vouch for the fact that the quality
is different. These colleges do produce their Jems. One in six is the average
for these colleges. Which is the average below the 6.5 point CGPA line for the
IITs.
I speak from personal experience.
However all that is by the way. The point of my earlier post was the quality of
reporting here at SI. It has always been poor and is steadily degrading.
I have congratulated Prassana for I am sincerely happy for him. I look forward
to following his career in the years ahead.
At the same time I repeat my earlier statement. One sparrow does not herald the
onset of Spring. Which is what this article is implying.
One person of how many?
This argument is the same as implying that all non-IITians are poor performers
because one of them is so.

Its high time we stopped patronising IITians as a majority of them dont care a
damn about India and are more interested in going abroad, mostly the US,
settling there and being identified as US Citizens. As a fellow IITian, I am
rather ashamed about this and I am happy to see that Non-IITians are also being
considered now.

Congratulations to Prasanna for the fabulous job offer!!!
It is true that just being from IIT does not make you a great engineer. Those
who think so are sadly mistaken. I have strong objections to the remarks of
Gautam Satpathy who can not reconcile with the fact that students from outside
IIT can be as competent as IITians. The process of selecting students through
JEE has a huge amount of luck associated with it. Even IIT faculty agrees to it.
Hence, those students of IIT who think that they are definitely superior to
those not selected in IITs are just fooling themselves. I have had my education
in IITs and know them well. True, IITs have a great reputation but the hype
created about these is more than they deserve.
Other educational institutions like NITs are fast catching up with IITs, and the
students who are selected in these NITs also have to go through a proper
competition. Many of them are probably as intelligent as the students who got
selected in IITs, but were not so lucky. In fact, with so may IITs coming up
and no competent faculty to teach in these institutions, the quality of
education at IITs is sure to fall and other engineering institutions may
probably beat IITs after some time.
I congratulate Silicon India for bring out this news. This should help in
clearing the mind sets of individuals about education in India. Keep it up.

One sparrow does not herald the onset of Spring.
My congratulations to Prasanna for bagging a good job and thanks to SI for
bringing it to our notice so that we could congratulate him.
However I find it unbelievable that a publication that pretends to speak for the
Indian IT industry tolerates such crap from it's reporters & editors. Please
learn the difference between the singular and the plural. Chasing fame via
sensationalism will ensure that your organization will get the same treatment
that thinking people give to all who try to fool them. You can fool some of the
people some of the time but not all of them all the time. If you wish to
continue enjoying your readership, then please get some professionals to write
these articles, nay stories, for you.
All the organizations I know of, and that is quite a number, do not pay more to
Non IITians. The difference is quite large in fact. So try not to delude
yourself that Spring is here because you have seen one sparrow. Let us know when
you have a seens a flight of sparrows.

these Prestegious Ones. It does matter where one got graduated from. Its just
not the performance which matters in 21st century.

doesnt mean IIT's are not the best.IIT's were the best ,are the best and will
remain the best.We still choose Anna University or BITS pilani and other
colleges after we failed to qualify IIT-JEE.Remember IIT is not a institute for
India but it represents a Class .

To Jai: Wake up from you ignorance, Anna university is not an unknown collaged
but a better research university than IITs. Two Anna university alumni won Nobel
prize as opposed to zero won by IIT-ians. Who are these two folks? CV Raman and
Chandrasekhar. IIT-ians are unable to get our of their 'hightly prestigious'
degree tag and focus on delivering rather than talking. The private sector is
unlike the government, they want people who deliver again and again, rather than
rest on their past 'achievements'!

How many can achieve this? Remember that Prasanna is one of the two non-IITians
among the 120 graduates .... that means rest are IITians ... We can't argue with
a rarely rare case :)

I agree with Jai. Who'd be crazy enough not to join IIT.
And initial pay package is not something that we should be looking at. We should
be asking, "How many Engineers will the graduate employ, 5-10 years after
passing out from the Institute?"

Its hard to believe that he dumped the Btech course from IIT against some
unknown college, for specializing in mechanical. All IITs also have Mechanical
engg, at par with best research institution in the world.
IIT would have further nurtured his talent.
And IIMs do not offer intenship ...forget of refusing it!!
Its good that he grabbed a great offer. But such arguements are simplistic and
fallacious.

This news item exemplifies that unbranded and real talent is still superior to
the branded and over rated talent
