NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday said that India hopes to send a spacecraft to the moon this year and called it "an important milestone".
"This year we hope to send an Indian spacecraft, Chandrayan, to the moon. It will be an important milestone in the development of our space programme," he said on the occasion of India's independence day.
"I want to see a modern India, imbued by a scientific temper, where the benefits of modern knowledge flow to all sections of society," he added.

1: Hello Puneet & Paddy , your point taken but
do you think other countries are not capable
of doing so Russia who started with USA in
space programmes why do you think they
stopped. Right now the money which is
available needs to spend more wisely i
think. What trade will develop do you think we
will develop space travel programme?

2: II applaud India's ambition in sending a
spcecraft to the moon. but at what costs? &
who pays for this? will the PM himsel desire
to go to moon? or his Good friends in the
Congress? or his best supporters? if so why
not publish the entire cost of the project to
PUBLIC, being tax payers money?
I would rather see money spent on such an endeavour is not worth at the present situation, wher Indias majority of the Poppulation live under the POVERTY lines? Insted invest, in the FREE EDUCATION for the future generations that will yield more proift to India than such MONEY wasting projects for the present time? In the interest of Financial Rich Peoples ambitions. Besides INVEST in SOCIAL PROJECTS- for Seniors, Bodily Handicapped Persons Fundamental requirments which is lacking in India and could some day file a Suit against INDIA for violating the fundaamenatal rights of INDIANs?

You need to look at the big picture. Rather than spending this money on local initiatives, majority of which ends up siphoned off as bribes and in corruption, you think to think of the goodwill that a space program and milestones will generate for India and the consequential ripple effects of it which will trickle down to the people of India.
It will open doors for more investment into the country, will spawn new industries and new trade which ultimately will benefit the people of India as a whole.
Think big!

4: I applaud India's ambition in sending a
spcecraft to the moon. I would rather see
money spent on such an endeavour than in the
creation of religious buildings, or even
public art. In the long run, there will be a
huge payback for nations with an active and
growing space exporation program. Infinitely
higher than the practical payback from
religion and superstition!
