Tata Sky terminates around 95 jobs

New Delhi: The strategy of reducing labor force to beat business losses has been a practice by Indian IT and BPO companies for months. Now it seems to be the turn of television service providers. Tata Sky, one of the major providers of DTH service in India has cut down its work force as part of a restructuring process, reported The Economic Times. They have now removed about five percent of their employees who were working in different departments of the company.
Vikram Kaushik, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Sky, said that they have recently reorganized the company by consolidating operations across India in an effort to maximize the quality and maintain consistency in operations. "In respect to the overall objective, the company has initiated reorganizing of some functions to bring in efficiencies across all levels. These changes will help streamline operations and optimize performance level, taking advantage of the present DTH industry," he noted.
"As part of the reorganizing exercise less than five percent of the staff were impacted. However, staff who had the requisite skill sets were provided with opportunities to move to other departments within Tata Sky and/or to other group companies," Vikram mentioned.
Most of the staff who have been removed were from the company's installation and after-sales service teams. According to the company officials, there are 1,900 employees in Tata Sky, which includes people on the payrolls as well as employees on contract as of May '08.
It is believed that the company was struggling with huge losses due to high customer acquisition costs and the recent price war in the DTH space. And that forced them to cut jobs.
However, a person who sacked from the position says "Several people have been sacked from the company across the country. Some of us have been able to find employment with other companies but there are others who are still jobless. We were all good performers and were sacked without any reason. When we asked Tata Sky for reasons, the company said that the move is not related to our performances. They said it's because some of the positions have become redundant."

1: This is the typical problem of the early
movers. They educated the market, but couldnt
convert the enlighted mass to customers-
Whereas the later entrants moved the 'Tata
educated' masses to customers. Tata
themselves confused the market at the wrong
time by black outing some channels and asks
for a higher addon charges for airing the
same. The half minded customers drifted away
fearing further reorientation of the channels
for extra bucks. The 'top of the mind' is
still tata sky- but for bad reasons. Unlike
SUN who have a valid reason to switchover
from cable to dish- The Tata sky failed to
show the value proposition for that high cost
of installation to the masses. Early mover
advantage is clearly undone- but they have to
suddenly regroup to fight the likes of SUN
and Reliance who has already sharpening their
weapons for the final war.

2: I wish they revamp their marketing strategy
by reducing cost and allowing multiple
connection per home which will boost their
sale and provide adequate job for the post
sales and installation team. If your sales
dips, obviously these guys will have no job.

5: TATA can employ these employees into their
subdivision companies or subsidairy
companies.But they can't remove employees
without One or Two months notice period.

11: I think HR practices at Tata sky seems to be
weak. They should think twice before hiring
any employee. Once hired it is companies
responsibility. They just can not send people
out like this. At least they should intimate
3 months before sending out and pay atleast 3
months salary in advance. Thats what
companies like BPL does.

12: This is a sad new of layoff.A repucated
company must have a vision for future.. why
unnecessary employ people & sack them for
loss of business. Insted a company should
take people who are in multi tasking job &
pay a handsome salary.

nation......Really....I mean it
Posted by: pooja - 12:00 AM Aug 08, ' 08
16: Yes,TATA is not famous for this kind of
step....its certainly a fault of
management...Cost cutting is now obvious &
its now have to follow certain methodology to
recruit people.last few years were common for
job hopping in Indian IT companies ..as
employees were switching companies very
frequently...now job hopping will reduce and
also demand for highly skilled ,nurtured
employee will increase ..Companies will now
accept race can only win by horses. its not
possible to win race with donkeys...which was
a trend in IT companies and it has been seen
that most of management were compromising on
standard of employee at the time of
recruiting..now nurtured people will be have
preference & time is for master of rather
then jack of one...so ...letnurture our self
with an all new trends and terminology.......

any firm taken. The market is being operated
money mindedly. Now if company is going
underloss then it has its strategies to
overcome from it.Similar was the move by

reality but seeing that everyday to keep us

22: TATA has the capability to employ all these
employees in other companies with in the
group. I understand the business prospects,
However, Top companies like TATA should not
be an example in the society to take such
decisions. On employees point of view, It
would impact hardly. We don't how many of
these employees are the only earning member
in their families. Let us pray for them to
get a good job sooner.

27: Hiring and firing is the accepted form of a
market driven economy. Hence, Tata Sky hiving
off some persons is a part of the game. If
one needs a "permanent job", join the IAS
brigade, and enjoy life at the cost of the
tax peyers' money.

30: The basic problem with TATASKY is the white
collared people who run it like old
kings.customer is taken 4 a ride b'cause of a
lack of vision of the top
management.unfotunately the axe as usual
falls on the workingcategory in the TATA's
and they are made scapegoats. this i am
saying with my 2 decades of sales experience.
