Retain your mobile number while switching provider

New Delhi: Mobile users in India must be happy as Government of India is going to implement Mobile Number Portability (MNP) system soon, reported The Economic Times. MNP enables users to change the current mobile operator to the other without having any change in their mobile number.

Department of telecom (DoT) is all set to announce the timeline and the methodology that will be adopted for the implementation of MNP within the next few weeks. Sources said that DoT will issue a request for Proposal (RFP) for selection of centralized operators who will administer and implement MNP. Later, Centralized operators will be selected through a bidding process and the successful bidders will have to invest up to Rs.100 crore to set up clearing houses for MNP. Then they become Mobile Number Portability Clearing House Administrators (MCHAs) and there will be a Number Portability Database (NPDB) to store the mobile numbers of all cellular users.

Earlier, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had submitted its recommendation on implementing MNP and it stated that a neutral third party should own and operate MNP clearing house and the centralized data base. TRAI had also suggested that the company should not have substantial equity (over 10 percent stake) directly or indirectly in any of the service provider in India, similarly any telecom service provider should not have substantial equity directly or indirectly in the company. "The cost for the system can be recovered by charging a port transaction fee from service providers," added TRAI.

Comment 1: I think there is no need for 3rd party in this game. This what leads to the mess we are already in. Soon the government will start gouging from MCHAs which the end consumer has to bear. Just look at the facts we pay close to 7 or as high as 40 cents for calls to India where as in Singapore it costs 5 cents to call from US. Rather why not set up a Peer system among all the subscribers with a watch system should a problem arise.

Comment 2: ya its a great idea!! but as the user will have the liberty of changing the networks without much fuss, there might be hike either in the calling rates or the switching rates. this might affect the indian subscribers as we do not like if the rates go high than the usual!!!!!!

Comment 3: Its a great news because now all the mobile subscriber will have to give there respestive client's best offers otherwise customer will quickly switch to other subsciber who will gives them best offer. since customer knows that his or her mobile number would not be changing. So goodluck all the mobile subscribers

Comment 4: I am sure all the mobile telecom customers are delighted. However just consider this fact - In India per minute call rates are already lowest in the world. While the majority of the costs (equipment & manpower, diesel for generators for each tower) are increasing. The competition is going from 6-7 operators in a circle to 9-10 operators. At one stage this will take its toll on the service levels. In the end, most subscribers will keep jumping from one operator to other, (they would need to pay some switching fees - which would go to the MCHAs) and finally they would realise that the QOS is more or less the same. The only entity that would be benefited is MCHA in this game.

Comment 5: It is indeed a superb plan from TRAI.
People are waiting for this kind of revolutionary changrs in telecome field.
Because of this, the service provided by various telecom service providers will be better and definitely will in the favour of the customers.

Comment 9: Need to look at the stakes to carry out these operations indigenously rather than depending on some other service providers. This system will not only enhance the QoS but also boost the competitiveness among the service providers, this should not be limited to voice based service but also need to upgrade the same to content and bandwidth based services. This system is already prevailing in US markets so need to be replicated in India ASAP.

Comment 12: Implementing the MNP I am hearing for some time now
It would be good if it comes out

Comment 13: I feel this is a fantastic development in the telecom sector.................!!!!!!!!!!

Comment 14: I feel the process is too complex as written here but factually it should be easier as all the Telecom Service Providers share their databases with vendors who call us the users and we have to get DND to avoid them so why this lengthy process?
