India ahead in corruption

New Delhi: India stands ahead in terms of corruption. As per the worldwide Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), prepared by independent international agency, Transparency International, India ranks 74th. U.S. is at 20th position. Ranking is based on the least corrupted countries.
Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore and Sweden, who tops in the list are the five least corrupted countries. The index, which involves 180 countries in the world, was prepared by an independent international non-government organization - The Transparency International (TI) known for addressing corruption worldwide.
The annual global corruption report released saw India stepping two places up from the last count, while it put the neighboring country Pakistan at 140th rank and China at 73rd, which was a place down in comparison to 2007 index.
Corruption in Iran, Libya and Nepal are also at high rate ranking 133, 134 and 135 respectively. Countries like Russia stands on 145th place while Sri Lanka and Maldives are at 96th and 90th respectively. However, Bhutan is the least Asian country at 41st slot.
The annual CPI, first released in 1995, is a tool for a comparative assessment of country's integrity performance. The index is a composite study by various independent institutions, business people, country analysts and who focus corruption in public sector.
The CPI ranked countries by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by opinion polls, surveys and high public standing individuals from all sections of society including academicians, lawyers, journalist, members from student body, non-government organization, independent welfare organization, political analysts and even public servants including politicians.
