No thrills: Employees say no to tier II city BPOs

Bangalore: Now here is a new challenge cropping up for BPO companies who have either shifted to, or started new branches in the tier II and III cities. Many such companies finding it very difficult to hire talents as today's youth is sticking on to a metro living style with shopping and other entertainment in the weekends, which those new locations is lacking in those cities.

A Nasscom-A T Kearney assessment of 50 leading locations for IT-BPO sector had already pointed out that a lack of recreational facilities was a handicap for the tier-II and III cities. But the study on `location road map for IT-BPO growth', had predicted that the share of sectoral employment in the top seven locations will decline to around 60-75 percent over the next decade and that will subsequently result in the rise of tier II and tier III cities'.

"But that cannot be achieved by only installing physical infrastructure like power lines and mass-transport system in tier II and tier III cities. Efforts should also be made to create an ecosystem that comprises social infrastructure with the trappings of metropolitan life," said Saurine M Doshi, partner A T Kearney India.

The industry experts admits that the first mover advantage does no way help BPO companies attract skilled employees to these locations.

A BPO staff Nirup himself exemplifies the trend. When he was asked by his company to get ready for a stint in Hubli-Dharwad, he decided to hunt for a new job.

"What can I do in Hubli after office hours or during weekends? If I remain in Bangalore, I can spend time visiting shopping malls, multiplexes and pubs," he was quoted as saying by Business Standard.

Comment 1: Hubli Dharwad is much better than Bangalore for the best and most essential entertainment .getting partners to enjoy evenings and nites, is far cheaper and cleaner and safer.

Comment 2: Dear Sir,

I agree with the sentiment, because it a valid arguement. Entertainment, appropriate kids schooling, infrastructure etc, which our successive govts have glossed over are being demanded, and rightly so.

The good side of this is it opens up great business opportunities for smart enterpreneurs to cater to this demand.

Thanks,

Comment 3: If every one in past have thought like us then do you think on today Tier 1 City so called have existed even, we have to make Tier II as much as Tier I and that;s not easy job but its not impossible.

Comment 4: I agree with Fact the challenge is there in transfering BPO/KPO industried in Tier II/III cities, but its not that it was not at all succesful, it is successful in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, it is succesful in Baroda, Gujarat - Companies like Collabera, Mphasis look in to that and learn something.

Comment 6: This is the tip of the iceberg and the bubble is just about to burst.

I guess we should start outsourcing Farming, Poultry and Agriculture.

Just imagine if such bubbles are sent across to India, grown rampantly, gave away free promotions year after year (rampant in captives) just to cut attrition, immature leaders (so called) and then ask them to head to villages.

Comment 7: To get talent to tier II cities companies need to think about most probable next city where they can get resources (talent + infrastructure + lifestye) All these are basic requirments for the people working in BPO industry. Cities like Nagpur should be given top priority

Comment 8: It's simple - companies need to offer attractive packages such as lavish amenities, housing, clubs, etc etc. Then they will come and stay. After an local ecosystem develops of people from that locality that join for upward mobility, there will be less need for such things (but then again, once the locals get trained, they will go to Bangalore anyway.... ha ha).

Comment 9: Many people in IT industries are looking forward to work in the Tier-2 cities because they want to give quality life for themselves and there family . They are all fed up with Traveling 3-4 hours for commuting to office . The time has come where people are looking for Vizag,Hubli-Dharwad,Nagpur to work to maintain there work life balance

Comment 10: Instead of sending employees to Tier II city. Compnay has to hire ppl from Tier II, train them in Metro and send back to Tier II cities.

Comment 11: Of course, why should we relocate when there are better career opportunities in tier I cities and why should we sacrifice our career for the companies.
