Fake documents galore in employee background screening

Mumbai: In the first study of its kind in India, an employee background screening company has found many aspirants give fake information on their background varying from employment to educational details. The study says that 85 percent of those who give fake information on the educational front support it with fake documents.

First Advantage specialises in background screening for 90,000 companies globally. It will make public its first 2008 quarterly report pertaining to the kind of "frauds candidates and employees perpetrate to acquire or retain a job".

First Advantage managing director (West Asia) Ashish Dehade told IANS that the report will be made public early next week.

Talking about the sudden interest of corporates in seeking background screening of potential candidates, Dehade said, "In recent times, we are witnessing a massive discrepancy and a high growth of risks in candidate recruitment and contract staff or vendor hiring".

"One of the reasons why many candidates manage to get away with spurious credentials and documents is because jobs are multi-located. In simple words, jobs are not confined to one region or state or country," he said.

"Thus it becomes very easy for a person to get away with forged documents and fake claims," said Dehade.

Comment 2: I am sorry, but I am unable to digest that it could be as high as 85 %.

Moreover, when a good employee leaves a company for better prospects, sometimes Employers hold agrudge over him / her and when some future employer sends a referral, a bad / wrong report is given. This could also be part of this 85 %.

Also the job market (read employment consultants / recruiters) now-a-days believe in paper degrees rather than the capability of the individual. This could also be the reason for the rise in fake certs.

Anyway I would stress that there a lot of employees who are honest with their certs and applications.. and hope hope Mr. Dehade is not trying to discredit everybody to start his business.

I would also like to know about Mr. Dehade's employment history.... just to know if he is also another jobless guy trying to make a quick buck. Like I have seen with some Employment Agencies. Some guys don't get jobs, and they start their own Employment Agencies if they have the capital... or they work in one..

Anyway good luck to all those who are employed... and i would like to assure you all that being honest with your employment history and education will not render you jobless..

Best Regards. GH

Comment 3: Its not at all surprising that so many people put fake credentials. But whats surprising is that the same companies who want the candidates credentials to be screened, also inflate the experience when they present candidates to the prospective clients to get projects !!!!

Comment 4: I have worked in a company where background verification takes 3 months time ......until that no one wait for the job as per Indian market scenario goes........I think these background verification companies are taking shape of a Industry now a days ...as same as hospital.......if you visit hospital for corporate health check up they will always come up with some new problem in your body.....over all every one need bread and butter.

Comment 5: unless the reasons mentioned are mutually exclusive, it cannot be 85%. If all the candidates who have inflated previous designations or provided false employment information have also given incorrect tenure, then the total percent will be 44 only. I have concerns with their statistical analysis.
