Relocation no issue for Indian workers: survey
By    siliconindia news bureau
Thursday, March 13, 2008
Bangalore: A new survey says that more than three-quarters of Indian workers would be prepared to relocate to a different city or even a country to find work. The study was conducted by Kelly Services, a global staffing services firm.

Traveling times to and from work are a key consideration of employees and the majority (67 percent) are not willing to spend more than 45 minutes for this. However, 18 percent are willing to spend 45 to 60 minutes and 14 percent are willing to spend 60 minutes or more each way.

The global survey sought the views of 1.15 lakh people in 33 countries, including 3,000 in India. Dhirendra Shantilal, senior vicepresident, Kelly Services, Asia-Pacific, said, "With a more globalized workforce, there is increasingly a recognition that people may have to relocate to find the right work, or to advance their career. There are many skills that are easily transferable across borders including those in areas such as banking and finance, IT, science and engineering."

Males are more likely to consider moving than females. One of the main complicating factors in moving to another country for work was family for 55 percent, followed by children's schooling (28 percent), language barriers (27 percent), property ownership (16 percent), tax complications (13 percent) and pension / superannuation rights (seven percent).

The survey also said that in India, 44 percent of people would like to move away from the place they currently live and work in before they retire. "This suggests that significant numbers of people will be actively looking to change their jobs, homes and lifestyles, with implications for employment, urban planning and transport infrastructure," Shantilal said.
