400 M smart card users in India by 2009

NEW DELHI: India will have 400 million people using the microprocessor embedded smart cards by 2009, indicating the country will adopt the smart card technology in a big way. Currently in India, about 70 million people use the smart card that are capable of storing 8 MB of data comprising driving license to car ownership details, besides others. In terms of revenue, the smart card market is estimated grow from $47.5 million currently to $248 million by 2009, offering opportunities to global players, organizers of the Smart Card Expo 2005 said. About 250 companies, including global and domestic companies like IBM, HID, Master cards and TCS are participating in the expo to improve the supply chain and the invention management in India before smart cards can take off in India.
