3Com defends opening India software development center

WASHINGTON: 3Com Corp, maker of computer networks systems, has defended its decision to open a software development centre in India next month, after cutting about 2,800 jobs in the past two years.
"The Indian operation won't take jobs from the firm's remaining North American operations, including its headquarters in Marlboro and another office in Andover," 3Com Corp vice-president (engineering), Liam Kiely was quoted as saying by Boston Herald.
The jobs added in India will free US engineers to work on a product 3Com Corp will release this summer aimed at helping big companies use the Internet for phone calls, Kiely said.
3Com Corp is likely to hire between 50 and 100 workers for its centre in Hyderabad by end of this year. The company is also likely to add 50 to 100 workers to its US operations.
"This is a specific initiative to support the growth we're seeing in our voice telephony products and make the best use of the skills we have in North America," Kiely said.
He conceded the company expects to pay less for the Indian engineering talent than it would pay for Americans.
