NEW DELHI: As many as 34 airports in 16 Indian states are lying unutilised, because they are unfit for operation or airlines do not want to land there. Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. These include five in West Bengal, four in Andhra Pradesh, three in Maharashtra, two in Uttar Pradesh, three in Bihar, three in Madhya Pradesh and two in Assam. The reasons for their not being used was "non-commitment of scheduled airlines to operate their services and airports being unfit for operations". Patel said in the last three years, airports at nine places, including at Surat, Hubli, Vijaywada, Gorakhpur, Allahabad and Shillong, had been made operational. More would be done in two more years, he added.
