THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government shelved the proposal to commercially exploit the mineral-rich sand in Alappuzha coast as a political consensus could not be reached on the issue.
After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said in this context the cabinet decided to reject the Justice John Mathew Commission report on sand mining which had recommended sand mining for industrial purposes with ecological safeguards.
The proposal to extract mineral-rich sand of Arattupuzha and Thrikkunnappauzha beaches of Alappuzha district had sparked widespread protests from political parties and environmental outfits on the ground that it would harm the fragile ecosystem of the coastline and displace hundreds of fisher folk. Even a section in the ruling Congress had come out strongly against the move.
