20 IIITs to come up on public-private partnership mode

Wednesday, 28 July 2010, 19:28 Hrs
New Delhi: The HRD Ministry has prepared a public-private-partnership model for setting up 20 IIITs under which the expenditure could be shared in the ratio of 85 to 15 between the government and industry.

"The government of India has a scheme of setting up new IIITs under PPP mode," Minister of State in the HRD ministry D. Purandeswari said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha recently.
20 IIITs to come up on public-private partnership mode

According to a note prepared by the Ministry for these projects, each Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) would be set up at an investment of Rs 200 crore and the government would bear 85 per cent of the expenditure.

Of the 85 per cent spending, the Centre would provide for 50 per cent and the state government would bear 35 per cent of the expenditure. It means the Centre will provide Rs 100 crore while the state government will give Rs 70 crore and the industry will provide Rs 30 crore for setting up of each IIT.

"The scheme is yet to be approved by the cabinet. The location and other details of the new IIITs will depend upon the schemes finally approved," the Minister added.

At present, India has four IIITs at Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) and Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu).

14:
The HRD Ministry initiative for a public-private-partnership model for setting up 20 IIITs under which the expenditure could be shared in the ratio of 85 to 15 between the government and industry is laudable. It seems there is a name and fame attached to IITs. Otherwise the HRD could strengthen the existing NITs . It is easy and cheaper to improve the IITS rather than starting new IITs which is time consuming.

More over 15% Industry investment is too meagre. It should be at least 40%. Already Industrial Giants like TATAs,Birlas,Mahindras,Mittals etc.,besides IT Giants like Infosys,Wipro are leading Companies in their fields.

In the fields like Electronics and Computers there is a dearth of Faculty as most of them get fabulous offers from Industry and Abroad.

The first started IITS in Chennai, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur and Kharagpur were having collaboration with other countries. That is why the financial crunch was not there.

HRD Ministry should ensure that quality should be the motto for the new IITS in the offing.

17: This is really great news for students but one more thing which is lacking in India is post graduation because of which many Indian students are going to abroad for higher education. If we have more universities like IISC then hope higher education problem will also gets solved soon.

18:I agree with you. It may be possible in near future as HRD minister's planning is going to the right direction. Hope & wait as India is being developed country.

I think a lot is needed to be done to improve higher education system...Govt should think about it more than providing many IITs and IIITs..

26:The report is correct. There are only 4 IIITs under Govt of India. Others are either private or under the state governments (e.g., IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, IIIT Pune, IIITM Trivandrum, LMIIIT Jaipur, etc).
Don't blame the media just like that.

27: thats correct!....though we have IIIT hyd..and IIIT bangl...these are already under public private scheme with major expenses tolerated by private industry and moreover UGC had their names changed from 'Indian institutes' to 'International Institutes'..

28: Its really a wonderful idea.. PPP model can bring quality education in IIITs and also, many students will get opportunity to pursue higher education. Union government should also prepare some PPP model for IIM and IITs.
