14 year old NRI is Australia's brainiest student

Melbourne: A 14-year-old girl of Indian-origin has been crowned as Australia's brainiest student in a neuroscience knowledge competition held in Sydney, reports ANI. Uma Jha, from Perth's Shenton College, in inner-west Shenton Park, beat over 4000 competitors from across Australia to bag the title.

The 2010 Australian Brain Bee Challenge is designed to test high school students on a range of topics, including intelligence, memory, emotions, sleep, Alzheimer's disease and stroke. Uma has to compete against other state winners in the national final of the competition, which included a brain-teasing anatomy exam, doctor-patient diagnosis and a neuroscience quiz.
14 year old NRI is Australia's brainiest student

"The competition was tied right up until the end and it was a really nerve-wracking finish," News.com.au quoted Uma as saying after the event. "I've never won a national science competition before, so it's amazing."

Uma will now travel to California for the International Brain Bee Challenge in August.

I have seen a LOT of instances where we actually treat foreigners as a superior race in our own country and then crib about it. It really irritates me. If you don’t trust me just go into any place frequented by them. The service offered would be the poorest to Indians – by Indians.
We are who we are and nothing can be generalized by performance of one individual. There are intelligent people and there are screw-ups in each country.

I just want to say iam proud of this girl as these are our true ambassadors ,well she is born in Australia ,but considering all the news sorrounding controversies about Indians here ,it is like a very welcome news high moral booster for me as well ,I think a lot of people out there would agree with me on this.
Whenever Iam down I look at such news and get inspired ,I also read again and again about Vinod Dham(father of pentium),Vinod Khosla(Co-founder Sun Microssystems),rao ramella(46th employee of Microsoft and coder for first version of Windows O/S),Pradeep Sidhu(founder and CTO Juniper networks),Gururaj Deshpande(founder of Sycamore networks ) and a host of others.
just the positive news is a hope for everything without which we cannot imagine life

Its is because of lack of opportunity and Infrastructure and the Dilapidated and Rusty and Obscure Structure of the Government that Force these Brilliant people to stay Abroad and never returned to India.

60: There are no rules, but its normal for immigrants to do well. It is similar to people migrating to the cities in search of better prospects and facilities. They cant afford to be complacent like the the people who belong to the place. They usually face several challenges in getting accepted by the local community. In a way, performing well overcomes this rejection by winning approval.

It is a necessary phenomenon. After all, if the localites are getting complacent and turning blind to the resources they have, its their problem.

Over all, immigrants make the prosperous nation prosper even more.

Again, its all a 'necessary phemenon'
Posted by: sentient - 02 Feb, 2010

61:Dear sentient, your phemenon may be right but this girl is not the immigrant, she born and bought up there, there is no question of acceptance or rejection by the community. The fact is she is a brilliant and extra ordinary girl. This is a fact not "necessary phemenon".

I was reading all the comments and every one is saying she is an Indian .. she is not an Indian ... cmmon grow up .. she is Australian .. having name Uma doesnt mean she is an Indian ... I dont think this is even a news for Indians to celebrate for ... for how long we will keep celebrating achievements of people of Indian origin .. with this big population why we are not seeing any talents here ... we have talent but it is getting wasted because of lack of facilities and only when people go abroad they get chance to show what they have got ...
God Bless India ...

66:I am with you .you are completely correct that India is lacking in lot of thing which prevent talented people to fully Utilize their Talent and thus arises the problem of brain drain. I am B.tech Students IIIT-Hyderabad which is one of the best research Institute and as per placements all companies which come for Placement are american or European origin . Moreover the Level of research in India is not good and one of the major factor is the Obscure politics and rusty politician and the policies of India. As the Result all students from IIIT-H go to US University for Master's and get a top-notch jobs, they are correct from there prospective. But India is rising and future largely depends upon the Government and the successful implementation of policies .

68: We are lacking in not just facilities, Infrastructure but number of other thing that could make this country most powerful in the world. For information Most talented students in India will be found in the urban places of Bihar where they don't know how to utilize their talent , they are lacking in opportunity .
All Students from IIT's and IIIT's are getting job abroad because US and Europe are lacking in Brain and India is the Richest Country in man power and Brain. Since I belong to IIIT-Hyderabad I have good understanding of IT jobs and Prospects. So if you have then you will definitely find a place in Heaven i.e US or Europe.
But Since all companies are opening their branches in India like in Bangalore and Hyderabad. This would solve a lot of problem regarding job creation , Revenue generation , IT power and Development of the country.
Future is changing and India is few Year will became the Third largest economy after US and China Beating them would take several decades.....
So Jai Hind and Cheers

69: First of all I am ANUJ not Anju :) But anyway ...

The reasons I gave you are 100% valid and I am being to several countries and I know how hard it is for a person to grow up in India in comparison to other countries be it America, be it Australia or be it some Europian country.

And you would have read this "Without weapons a soldier can not win their battle" though you might say "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men" ... but if it is so then why we are not getting Nobel Prizes .. forget Nobel(some people say its only for westerners) .. where actually we are showing our talent ...
with a population of more than 1 billion people tell me few names who got the chance to some thing real or if u cannt name few then there can be 2 reasons either in India no one cares about talent or Indians are not at all talented. I dont agree with second, so I end up saying we have a lot of talent but wasted, unused and unappreciated.

Uma Jha, winning the Neuro Science Bee contest has gone on to prove betony a shadow of doubt to the WASPs that Indians are the brainiest people in the whole wide world. How many more Indians are you WASPs going to kill before India sends it's army to Australia to punish you WASPs once and for all!
Posted by: Saif Aly - 02 Feb, 2010

83:WOW! That's pretty heavy talk! I agree that it's not good when people (of any origin) are harmed no matter where they are. We should all be safe. But let me remind you that an Australian father and his young son doing voluntary work were burnt alive in India not so many years ago for their religious beliefs, another woman in her 50s was raped and murdered by a taxi driver in Delhi. There of course would be other incidents like these that happen all over the world and yes it's is wrong and very sad for the families.
I also think that Saif Ali and anyone else who shares his sentiments might pause and examine the intent of some of the Indian media while awaiting the details of the court hearing on one of the incidents in Australia.
Regardless of where you come from in the world, the vast majority of Australians, embrace and enjoy all cultures.

111: Congrats Uma.And for who needs to take pride..its only her.Not indians not australians.I dont believe in patriotism as its just a superset of regionalism. There are many indian born, australian born, american born, african born......greats in the history we are only supposed to applaud their achievments.Take pride in your achievements and applaud others ..........the way to human life.

133: WE ALL KNOW THAT INDIANS ARE GREAT.. AND THERE IS NO COMPARISON FOR US.. ALL QUALITIES ARE THEIR IN INDIANS.. BUT THE PROBLEM INDIA IS SUFFERING FROM IS BRAIN DRAIN.. OTHER COUNTRIES ARE TAKING MORE BENEFITS FROM OUR MEMBERS.. BUT YES.. CONGRATULATIONS UMA..NDIA IS THE BEST
Posted by: sakshi jain - 01 Feb, 2010

134:There is no drain of brain from here. The comment makes me feel that the people who have not escaped from here do not have brains, and those with brains have gone. It is nonsense. What is lacking here is the ambience for everyone to use their brain. Only a few are allowed, over here.

138: Congratulations Uma Jha, for your outstanding performance. Yes, Indian origin students excel in abroad schools. Today the IQ of children is very high. Creativity and Innovation have become buzz words in every field.

In India also I find in School science exhibitions, Indian Children's Science Congress quite innovative projects. After school education there is hardly any scope to carry forward the innovative spirit.

We must identify the bright and innovative students and provide avenues to carry out research. Interest in basic sciences is on the decline. Union Government allocated huge funds for research in basic sciences.

Earlier there used to be excellent programme, “NATIONAL SCIENCE TALENT PROGRAMME". I found quite a number of students became successful scientists selected under the programme.

CATCH THEM YOUNG should be our motto in shaping future scientists and technologists in India.
