10 Overhyped Tech Products That Died Miserably

#9 PowerMac G4 Cube

At MacWorld New York in 2000, Steve Jobs showcased a PC and said, "quite possibly the most beautiful product we've ever designed". It was an 8" cube with a top-loaded DVD player, slide-out hardware, no cooling fan, and specs were better than PowerMac. The device caused quite a stir; ITworld reported that the device had "pure sex appeal." A year later, there was no customer asking for it. The device was hit by slow sales despite price cuts, competition from Apple's other Macs, and missing expansion options. Still, thanks to its design, the New York Museum of Modern Art holds a G4 Cube, along with its distinctive Harman Kardon transparent speakers, as part of its collection.

#8 Palm Pre and WebOS

The Palm Pre was a multimedia Smartphone that was designed and marketed by Palm with a multi-touch screen and a sliding keyboard. It is the first device to have Palm's Linux based mobile operating system, webOS.

At CES in 2009, Palm took on the iPhone by splashily unveiling the Palm Pre and WebOS. It had Facebook integration and other features that its competitors lacked.  The audience was bedazzled.

But on launch, the Pre was pricey and limited to Sprint. Despite marketing and distribution promises, the mobile platform WebOS and the device Palm Pre failed to impress consumers.
