Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I was born to extraordinary parents. My father was the descendant of an indentured labourer and my mother the daughter of a freedom fighter. When I was born my father was a senior diplomat!I married an executive and have 2 daughter and a grandson.
Role Model:
I have many role models but above all it has been my parents. They set the bar very high and I am still striving to be worthy of them.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
Undoubtedly the setting up of Project Why. I always wanetd to 'do something', to ' make a difference' but never quite knew how. In 1998 I took the leap. Project started with 20 slum kids. Today it reaches out to over 900. I still have to pinch myself to believe that I did it.
Done Differently:
Nothing. I believe that every experience we have, good and bad, are part of the extraordinary journey called life and have to be lived and savoured as they set the stage for the next step.
Job Profile:
On paper I am the founder of Project Why and organisation striving to make a difference in the lives of a 1000 deprived souls. In reality I am everything from boss to chief bottle washer, via being Maa'mji to the children.
Required Reading:
My industry is where you start learning to look with your heart. My all time favourite book is the Little Prince of St Exupery. Other books that have touched me would be Letter to a child never born by Oriana Fallaci and recently the Hunger Games Trilogy. And why not my own book Dear Popples!
Growth Strategy:
Read, read read. Look around with open eyes. Have the courage to look into the eyes of the humblest. Make a difference whenever I can.
Working Life Management:
I am lucky to have entered my twilight years when most of your responsibilities are taken care of. From looking after a family of 5, I now care for a family of 900 and growing. It is wonderful and humbling.
Degrees That Matter:
Not really. Just having your heart in the right place
Other Thoughts:
Try helping someone, lending a helping hand, looking with your heart. It is most fulfilling and makes you better at all else.
The Decisions That Matter
Always followed my conscience and done what I though was right. Never been afraid of walking the less trodden road.
Advice For New Professionals:
Do what you think is right.
