Vijay Thakur's Advice

Trusting your team

I think a Leader should be a highly qualified, multiple experienced and decision oriented person to lead any company. He should have trust and get feedback from teams, but should never depend on others.
Achieving Success and ensuring growth
As per my understanding, Leader should be very focused on the targets & accomplishment. Always be attentive with open ears, eyes, mind and should have nose for the new news, idea’s & happenings in the industry and always try to be the first to introduction of latest and innovative technology.

Current work profile
Chief Operating Officer(,Telindia-a Telecom Tower Infrastructure Co(IP-1)New Delhi, carrying out on bridging the rural-urban digital divide by creating viable “Rural Broadband eco System” by fusing world’s latest technology with innovative business plan. www.panchayattower.in
Taking Important career decision
We have signed MOU with Ericsson, Sweden and India in 2009, to launch world latest and next generation tower technology which would not only play a vital role in the reduction of towers but also provide one single platform to host all the operators in one tower. It would also generate the revenue and employment at the rural India level and to the Tower Operator. It reduce the CO2 level, save electricity and lower deployment cost with the superior design(received Wall Street Journal award USA and approval by IIT,Delhi.) Its a fully encapsulated site with indoor climate, a small footprint, approximately five meters in diameter, the footprint is 60 to 75% smaller than traditional steel sites, makes it easy to find locations, creates a landmark with opportunities for branding, marketing and advertisement, its’ Randome(top cover equipment) protects its flexible design with different heights and colours makes and it easy to customize the design, the Randome protects the antennas from all kinds of weather including wind, sun, dust, rain, storm and lightning. It entails a low cost to operate with a low environmental impact. This tower does not require extra cooling and has greatly reduced the feeder loss, depending on configuration, can result in a 40% reduction in CO2, emissions. It uses 1/10th of steel compared to traditional steel tower sites. CO2, emissions related to material, production and transport are at least 30% lower. Consume low amounts of energy. There is no need for feeders and cooling can reduce power consumption by 40% compared to traditional steel towers. Requires a minimum of maintenance and need no security and gardening.
Managing personal and professional life
With my year’s of multiple intergovernmental and personal professional experiences, I can easily connect the right dots and take immediate steps. I believe in team work but in addition to that I will have my own source of information and liaison almost at each and every level of the industry to identify and connect the right dots.
Handling Office disputes
Telindia is still a growing company and we have formulated our HR policy in such a way that most of the employees are known to each other and to the management too. We are like a family and even if there is any grievance, we deal with collectively in the monthly open house meeting, where the Management and employees take a seat together. Everything is target oriented and hence there is very little space for grievances.

Leadership skills
No, not at all and it’s by no means easy task to be a leader of a newly founded Telecom Tower company specially in India where an extremely giant private and public players and huge companies like TATA, Rcom, Indus,Idea, Airtel Infra, GTL, American Tower Co, BSNL etc have their deep grass roots in each field. In-fact it was very difficult, gigantic challenges and entirely tough task for me at every level to establish and even to think about an idea of opening of new tower company. But I took this challenge and today completed most modern first site at village Ramnagar,Sonepat Haryana. This site is a combination of entirely unique idea in Indian telecom sector where Panchayats and private sectors like Ericsson , Telindia and Luminous join hands together to have a win-win situation for every stakeholder. Various concerned team Heads of viz. Vodafone,Aircel,Airtel Infra,Idea,Stel has visited and praised our efforts , but still have not signed any MOU for their operations in rural India.

Definitely there is no short cut to a leader, he have to have the special worth, strong determinations, dedication ,will power, leadership qualities and potential to deal productively to cross many unidentified barriers & challenges . Whosoever wants to establish him-self as a real leader, has to face and win over the countless challenges. As per my experiences, a real leader should have a complete & clear vision for his mission, mettle to face challenges, through professional knowledge & skill, fitting educations, rich multiple experiences, excellent liaison almost at every level whether govt or private sector, as well as management skill to handle and face any forthcoming challenges right from lower to higher level. For a real leader, there is no excuses for any failures.

My advice
I think a Leader should be a highly qualified, multiple experienced and decision oriented person to lead any company. He should have trust and get feedback from teams, but should never depend on others.

I studied upto matriculation in Govt High School,Jogindernagar and did my Graduation & Post Graduation from HP University Shimla.
I am a Topper of the University having earned the Gold Medal from Punjab University in Master of Mass Communications. I did MBA(Mkt & Operations)from Punjab Technical University and PhD Scholar in Management Studies with IIT, Delhi.
Worked as Head of various departments in many State and the Central Govt’s, Ministry, PSU, Public and Private Sectors and have about 20 years of multiple working experience at national and international level. Served with Indian Telecom & IT Ministry, Govt of India as Officer On Special Duty and was one of the key officer to highlight & implementing India’s First Telecom Policy 1994. Also served with VSNL and TATA for years. Recently Emirates Airlines of UAE have offered me a position of Chief Operations Officer, Malaysia to handle their Malaysia business.

My views on India Technical development
Indian companies are basically service providers only and have never seriously focused on their Research and Development arms. As per the latest survey, India is still far behind in its R&D. A few public sectors have vision on R&D, but not at par Japan, China, Korea and USA, whereas our private sector still are not intensification their R&D wings, hence our technical talent is going abroad. We are a nation who procure new technologies and implement in India, but when we come to know of the operations and maintenance cost of that technology. we begin to think a lot as with the passage of time it has cost us much higher than its actual cost. We can only make it possible when our private sector will comes up with strong R&D determination, the Govt frames such a rules and regulations and make it mandatory for our private sector to have an R&D wing.
