Pre-sales has become an integral part of the IT organization. Earlier only MNC IT companies used to have an extensive pre-sales team, and all the small time players used to train their sales people to also look after the pre-sales part.
But things have changed over the past 7-8 years. Now companies have started taking this department seriously. A project to some extent or to more extent depends on the quality of the proposal submittied to the client. The content should be specific, relevant and useful for the client and should reflect the solutions to the client's requirement.
So, compannies need people having skills in these fields as it has become an integral part of for winning a customer.
At the same time pre-sales folks are also involved in other activities like, budget forecasting, revenue expected for their BU and etc..
My advice to upcoming professionals
Don't think that Pre-sales is an ordinary job or a very easy job. It has now become an integral department of every IT company. The job requires you to be deligent, informative and accurate. You can't mess with a multi-million proposal. A sharp eye to find loop holes in a proposal is very essential and timely feedback to various stakeholders is also important.
In pre-sales you don't work with one department, but you work with Finance, Legal, Delivery, Sales and alike, so one gets a good opportunity to work with all the departments and learn first hand.
