Essential Advice
Learn Strong basics of systems whatever it may be viz. Financial, Web, Embedded, Kernel etc.
Understand Testing Methodologies viz. SDLC, V&V etc..
Understand your program viz. basic & advanced functions, non-functional uses, intended users, intended market, what all users can do on your product, etc
Plans for the Future
There are 2 ways of functional growth : Technical & Managerial.
I find myself better into technical than managerial, so I would be growing towards Technical Leadership along with mentoring new entrants in the domain to assist me in my programs
Required Reading
Software Engineering
Domain Specific Functional QA materials
Language based materials - C/C++/HTML/JAVA/Linux based on domain demand
User experience - by visiting tech-sites viz. anandtech
Points of inflection
Change of Domain when I switched from Bio-Medical to Navigation then Navigation to Software QA. I had to restart everything again to effectively work on the programs.
The Journey So Far
I had started my career as Service Engineer in a Medical Instrument Co., followed by Navigation Engineer in Oil & Gas Sector. Later I moved to Software Validation in Windows Graphics Device Driver. I worked as just execution engineer in Software Validation & then moved till Team Lead & Planner.
Areas for the Future
Web & Cloud will dominate in future along with underlying technology for them.
Currently working at
I work as a Team Lead in Software Validation team of Windows Graphics Device Driver, where I have to manage Test Planning, Engineering, Debugging & Reporting.
Role Model
I never took anyone as my role model for my career. I just moved along.
Tech trends to watch out for
Earlier Black Box Testing was good, but now GreyBox & WhiteBox are in much demand where you not just test & submit defects but also suggest fix.
Most Important Decisions
I chose system level domain, where there are scarcity of resources. Graphics Resources are hard to find in job market. Hence I can innovate & impart my learning to new joinees in the domain.
Changes in the industry
When I started, it was just testing the feature, but now we not only test but also compare market for competitive products, debug, provide fixes, & get along with the the product from start till end. Now Testing is no more a bottle neck for products.
