Brief description about me
I work as a Systems Analyst in Science Gateways group at Indiana University, Bloomington. Our group specializes in developing middleware solutions for scientific gateways for grid computing. Our group helps scientists run simulations and workflows on HPC (High Performance Computing).Various projects on which I am currently working areUltrascan (An open source analysis and modeling software used by biochemists, biophysicists and material scientists), Dark Energy Survey (Astronomy Group to discover the nature of dark energies), One Degree Imager (Astronomy Portal/Pipeline to process data from new ODI camera in Tucson, Arizona, USA). Wedevelop workflows solutions to run on super computers connected byXSEDE(Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Enviroment). Aligning with the group mission, I work on open source projects Apache Rave and Apache Airavata. My publications can be found at http://dl.acm.org/author_page.cfm?id=81467643706. I also blog at http://communitygrids-raman.blogspot.com/. Before joining Indiana University, I have worked in Industry for 8 years, on Enterprise Application Integration(EAI) and Business Processes Modeling (BPM) solutions.

I did MSc computer science from Maharishi Dayanand University,Rohtak and BSc Hons from Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana.
Challenges in job
To help and work with scientists who are working on their domain specificproblems is very challenging. Different scientific disciplines have different way of approaching the problems and not all of them are very open to use softwares/solutions provided by others and not developed by their own group. Certain domains involves large amount of data or simulations such as biology and astrophysics. To convince and develop infrastructure for the scientists, provides us experience for dealing with different type of clients with different problems and work environment. Working with thousands of nodes on a multi core machine is challenging. I believe problem-solving skills developed working with scientist and HPC (High Performance Computing)will prepare me for bigger professional challenges in my career.

Job made easy
Working on multiple projects and without any hard deadlines taught me self-discipline. You need to be self-motivated to publish research papersand need to organize time and schedule well to find opportunities for academic funding. Scientific conferences are the stage to demonstrate your work and build new collaborations.

Upcoming Trends
Developing countries of Asia, South America and Africa are investing to develop super computing centers to enrich the scientific research. Growth in life sciences and big data processing requires massive computing power. There is a paradigm shift in programming languages to optimize and utilize the massive computing resources. Technologies are evolving faster than everand softwares are rapidly changing. To keep up with the changing technologies, I use the agile approach to software development in my job.

My point of view
There is a considerable development in private sector in India but universities and academic research are left behind. Lot of universities does not have infrastructure to support scientific research and they are dependent on private funding. Computational infrastructure like XSEDE (The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment)will help local researcher to perform their research and provide technological exposure to the young scientists. XSEDE have educational programs for High school students and financial support programs for young scientists. Similar initiatives are needed in India to build our future.
My goal
My goal is to earn an MBA degree to learn and enhance management skills in order to be a good and efficient leader. I want to improve my understanding of the economics behind running a successful corporation.
Family background
My father retired as a principal of Government College Muktsar, Punjab. He taught Economics for 34 years. My mother retired as a School Teacher. My eldest sister earned PhD in Biochemistry from Punjab Agriculture University and my second sister did M.A. Hons in English from Punjab University. She is currently working as a high school teacher in Punjab.

Advice to professionals
Its simple, work hard and look forward. Having a will to grow will definitely take you further in life. All the hard work you are doing is for your own growth.Be a team player, as your growth depends on the growth of your team. It is good to have ambitions in life, so that you will work towards fulfilling them.

Advice to students
I would be made aware about scientific research and opportunity at an early stage of life rather than later, as it will help make career choices. In India, sometimes parents, ignoring the interest of their children, make the career choice. It can some time lead to dissatisfaction in later stages of career or lost of enthusiasm. Everyone should try to find job/work related to interests, such that it is always interesting for them to work on. Schools need to do better job providing career counseling at the early stages and work on personality development of the students.
