I would refer books written by Dr. Heinz Goddar (European Patent and Trademark Attorney) and Mr. Steve Shear (former United States Patent Examiner).

I would also ask people to go through US statutes, European patent law and Indian Patents Act to get a grip on the laws governing patent rights.

Goals and Ambitions

As an IP savvy and my recent stint in an LPO setting, I have developed an innate commitment towards creation and protection of strategic and tactical intellectual property assets of the clients. Working closely with the technologists and the attorneys, I look forward to investigate IP risks for new product introductions and suggest possible actions.

In India, as we transition from the current FIRE (Finance, Insurance and Real Estate) based economy to knowledge-based economy, intangible assets will inexorably emerge as drivers of productivity and economic growth. Keeping this in mind, I have a vision to counsel domestic industries to help them foster their strategy and innovation roadmap.

Views about 'Tech product Introduction is weak among Indians'

In our country, the domestic industry lack the will to innovate. Having patent regime in effect, it is imperative that every enterprise come up with an IP division and attract the best of technical minds from premier institutions of the country.

We may, for instance, force pharmaceutical MNCs to issue compulsory licenses, but it is not in the best of interest to let domestic industry drool over all the time and come up with generics in such manner. Competing with the technologists across the border will help us build our position in the world market, and also encourage aversion of brain drain through immigration.

My achievement

When I was with TATA Consulting Engineers, I got a chance to attend TATA IP Management Programme. The 2-days workshop helped me find genuine interest in the field of Intellectual Property. Now, I can sense the technology more than ever. I feel truly worthy of being an engineer.

Challenges faced in job

In some of the projects, searching the subject matter is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Closing in on what the technologist seeks from my efforts gives me an immense pleasure. Plus, when it is a complicated subject matter, my technical know-how deepens and cross-functional knowledge reaches new horizon.

Being different

Most of the engineers work on projects of repetitive nature. Research and Development is something that lets the brain churn out innovative concepts, but it is not possible for everyone to grab one such opportunity. In my current role, I come across various technologies and gain insights.

Managing professional as well as personal life

I maintain that my work efficiency does not fall below what is logically ascertained by experts. Not just that, I also surf through business news and reports of the key players besides completing, within set deadline, the job assigned. Beyond office hours, I meet friends. On weekends, I plan out, eat out, watch movies and even attend open seminars. This way I have a perfect balance between my professional and personal life.

Family Background

My father and I graduated in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Jamshedpur. He, unlike me, was one of the toppers in his batch. He is one hell of a sociable person. In 2009, he retired as Superintending Engineer from government service.

My mother is a housewife. She loves cooking and knitting. She is the most adorable person in my life.

My elder brother could not pursue studies because of epileptic seizures. Having recovered from what was nightmare for my family, he now runs his own business.

I take breaks when it is needed, and do not succumb to undue pressure.

Company and job profile

I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate, having about a year of consulting experience in Green Building/Power Plant projects within the TATA group. I did my Post Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Management, so I could pursue a career in the niche area of patent research and analytics.

Currently, I am employed as an Associate in a Bangalore-based startup catering to the strategy and innovation needs of US and Europe based clients. My work mostly involves generating technology landscape or technology monitoring (patent watch), besides conducting invalidity searches and freedom-to-operate searches prior to the product launch.

My advice

I would advice not to rush through the job assigned, rather give it a wholesome thought and pick on the technology step-by-step. You might be pressurized to hurry up on the strategies which, according to me, is not the right practice. Spend more time on developing an understanding of the subject matter. Rest assured, you will do great.
