Career Expectations
Since the profession of Pharmacy in India is just over 6 decades old when compared to the west with over 10 decades of experience, there is scope for significant changes to take place in the future.
More importance is being given to the R&D with the Pharmaceutical industry utilizing a plethora of novel approaches, techniques and technologies for Drug Design and Discovery.
Also, with the increasing awareness in the public on Generic drugs, more companies are now focusing on generic drug manufacture that will help make medicines accessible to majority of the people. With the SC verdict favoring generic manufacture of Glivec, a proprietary medicine of the Novartis, the environment is now conducive to generic drug manufacture.
With the Pharma-D course introduced few years ago, there is also a scope for bringing about a paradigm shift in the Pharmacist-patient interactions wherein the patient compliance can be greatly improved.
The future is full of opportunities for improvement.
Favorite subject
Pharmaceutics is my strongest subject. it is concept drive and doesn't involve cramming. I retain everything that i have studied for a very long time.
Areas of study, like the novel drug delivery systems, industrial Pharmaceutics and Cosmetic technology keep me glued to my seat.
every time that i come across a new technology or a product, ( like the Optizorb Technology in the manufacture of Crocin Advanced,)i get to recalibrate my inquisitive lens.
In all the four years of my graduation i scored excellent grades in this branch of Pharmacy, out of sheer interest that it has evoked in me, to learn more.
Most proud accomplishment
Throughout my student life, I have toiled for academic consistency and personal competency. I not only ensure to pay attention in class but also to work hard to build a comprehensive learning foundation.
Thus, receiving Institutional awards for excellence in academics for 12 years consecutively, at school has been my biggest achievement so far. These awards instilled in me, the passion to learn and reinforced my volition to perform better in the successive years.
They inspired me to carry the academic diligence into my graduate degree. They kept me motivated to learn new things and made me confident. Maintaining consistency over years wasn't a cake walk. But I learnt to push myself beyond the limits and to walk that extra mile with an aim to keep my performance in academics, consistent. I continued with the same hard work during my graduation and topped my class every semester. And in the final year, I received the award for academic proficiency as the batch topper of my college.
Family Background
My parents are from Kakinada, Andra Pradesh.Currently we live in Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.we are a happy family and we strongly believe integrity to be the most important virtue.
My father is a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He completed his B.E in mechanical engineering from Andhra University with full scholarship 35 years ago. My mother completed her MA- B.Ed from the same university too. She teaches music (classical Carnatic vocal and Veena)in Sriharikota.
I also have an elder sister.she is married and has a three year old son.Recently, she completed her diploma in classical Carnatic music (vocal) at Andhra University.
my mother, sister and i sing classical carnatic music together at local concerts, and my mother has also played veena for the AIR years ago.
My uniqueness
From the very beginning, I have taken up various leadership roles with alacrity.
As a NSS captain in class 11, I organized free medical camps in the villages nearby and in class 12, as the School Pupil Leader, I was responsible for maintaining decorum of 650 students. These positions helped sow seeds of leadership during the early days of my academic career.
During undergraduate studies, I was the Chief Organizer for the first state level technical event of my college. This helped me understand how leaders affect the teams because I witnessed my team getting motivated by the hard work I put-in. My managerial skills were further honed, during my stint as the coordinator for 4th national student congress organized under the aegis of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association.
while i got many opportunities to develop my leadership skills, i realized that deeply, i am a team player. i work along with my team while leading them, and this makes working in groups, very easy and interesting for me
Most influenced factor
My maternal grand father was the chief executive member of the First Pharmacy Council Of Andhra Pradesh. His formulation Niafolin is still being sold at many drug stores.
when it was the time for me to choose a career path, this influenced me a lot, and wanting to walk in his footsteps, i chose this field.
Favorite Books and Articles
recently, i read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R covoy. It helped me understand that two people can look at the same thing and yet differ with each other. Because there exists a different perspective with every individual.
He highlighted the importance of self-mastery and interdependence, that are central to effectiveness in life.
"Use empathic listening to be genuinely influenced by a person, which compels them to reciprocate the listening and take an open mind to being influenced by you. This creates an atmosphere of caring, and positive problem solving" really influenced me.
The concept of "abundance mentality" is something i implement in my life. i genuinely celebrate the success of others rather than feel threatened by it, and it only adds to my happiness every time.
First Job Expectation
job is the opportunity where we implement everything that we have learnt so far. its where we strive to give our best.to me, its an important part of who i am.
the top three thing that are most important to me while looking for a job are:
1) challenging work that requires frequent "sharpening of the saw"
2) healthy working environment
3) satisfaction, both in terms of salary and standard of work that needs to be done.
Most flourishing college experience
Weeks after i joined college, we had an oral presentation competition where we had to speak on a research/ review article of our interest along with a PowerPoint presentation for 20 minutes. students of all the four years were to present together and there was no sub-grouping.
i presented a review article on Progeria (inspired after watching "paa") and bagged the first place.
in the later years, i represented my college at various state and national level elocution competitions and won several prizes.reading my name off the local news papers(telugu) after the competitions was always exciting.
The best of them all was standing first at the state round of the National Elocution competition by the Indian Pharmaceutical Association in December 2011 where we had to compete with nearly 20 participants from across the state that were shortlisted after filtration.
Challenges facing by students
lack of exposure is the biggest challenge faced by the students. we are not given a platform where we can gather a comprehensive overview of various career opportunities that are available. a student of class 10 will not have the right perspective of the student's true potential and area of interest. and without getting an opportunity to explore the student is made to choose a stream.then the student is forced to choose an occupational course early in life.
as the student proceeds with a prematurely narrow point of view into a career that the student chooses either due to fascination or half baked ideas, the true potential remains untapped.
also we don't have the opportunity to switch streams, when we realize our area of real interest later on.
Also, not all students have good access to quality internships, branded institutes and sources of reference that can help them find a job befitting their potential and academic skills.
View s for better India
Researcher Diane Hedin indicates that an unfathomable gap between the curriculum and the everyday lives is the reason for the lack of motivation among the students to contribute to the nation.
students from young age should be motivated to get involved in activities like community service.Among the most significant gains reported from this activity are the psychological, social, and cognitive benefits experienced by students.
By participating in service projects, students forge bonds with each other, as well as other members of the community. These bonds enhance their interpersonal skills and increase
their social network. Additionally, volunteerism can lead to increased care for others and a desire to cooperate and get involved in positive ways.
opportunities must be provided to the students to hone their leadership skills.
and talent must be duly considered and appreciated, which will inspire them to improve themselves and perform better in every activity that they take up
Spare time activities
Music is an inseparable part of my life, be it singing or listening.I dedicate fixed amount of time to practise classical carnatic music each day.
i also enjoy long walks in the late evenings, during which i reflect on the happenings of the day and plan for the next day.and sometimes i go out on long walks with my friends to a nearby lake (The Pulicat lake), where we spend some time enjoying the nature.
i also am a big fan of the Indian cricket, and never miss a single match when India plays.
About Myself
I am JVN.Savitha. I was born in Kakinada and brought up in Sriharikota. i studied in Space Central School and graduated from St.Mary's College Of Pharmaceutical Sciences and research, Kakinada.I am friendly and outspoken, though i take some time to open up to people around me.family and friends matter a lot to me.i am curious by nature and and love to learn new things.i love reading books of all sorts, from fairy tales to philosophy, form history to fantasies. i believe that integrity is the most important value that one can have.
i feel blessed to have parents who support and encourage me through trials and tribulations. And i don't let the disappointments in life to pull me down.my friends always say that i possess a warrior spirit inside me that can never be subdued.after all, we only live once, so i believe that its okay to take risks, to experiment and to explore things that interest me.
Time Management
I always make a time table on the daily basis. i stick to schedules and always prefer to be on time. so i prioritize the works on hand based on urgency and importance, keeping works with closer deadlines on the top and so on.
sometimes irrespective of the deadlines, if the work at hand proves useful in the long run, then that gets priority too.
then i divide a task into several smaller tasks and time them accordingly so that the overall quality of work doesn't get compromisied.
Additional information
recently i have been to the Jagriti Yatra 2012. "Jagriti Yatra is an annual train journey that that takes hundreds of India's highly motivated youth (with some participation of international students),on an eighteen day national odyssey, introducing them to unsung heroes of India." its vision is to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship among these youngsters.the facilitators for our team were fun to work with.
I was shocked when my facilitators from Delhi and the US said in front of people/press and some big-wigs that I could be the prime minister of India one day.. i had never seen myself in that light but to hear others view me like that gave me self-confidence i hadn't possessed....
i also felt excited Mrs.Kristen O'Brien Neymarc, Executive Director, The Leadership Center HEC Paris Graduate School of Management, one of our facilitators, remarked that i possessed a rare combination of the double quality of intellectual horsepower and good social skills.
