Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I was born and raised in a small village in Punjab. Both my parents were teachers in Government school in Punjab. I am the youngest in my family, my elder brother and sister are veterinarian by profession.
Currently working at
I am working with a Canada's leading food company (Maple Leaf Foods) leading Qusality Assurance and Food Safety department for all their plants in the west. My role involves setting up Quality Management and Food Safety systems and standards for the plants and ensure food safety for consumers.
A Fine Balance:
I like to work on the principle of “time for everything and everything on its time”. In the fast paced work environment, I make sure to allot time for my family, friends and myself. Without priotizing the activities and sticking to the schedule, it’s hard to manage the equilibrium.
Most Important Lessons
Smart work, honesty (towards company, community and yourself) and good work ethics always pays. Team work, dedication and doing little better everytime is the key to success.
Changes in the industry
I have witnessed a huge shift in the way Quality Assurance / control operates in the food manufacturing plants. There is a shift from reactive to proactive approach, QC to QA / TQM. Producing a good quality product is no more an option but mandatory to stay in business.
Points of inflection
After my graduation in Engineering (Food Sciences), I joined the food industry in production department. With my interest in product development and quality assurance, made my move to Quality Assurance. Followed what I enjoyed the most to make best use of creativity.
Degrees that Matter
Yes, degree in Engineering / food science help to brdge theoratical knowledge with product actualization. Other certifications like HACCP, ISO standards, BRC, Auditing skills, 6 sigms and other statistical tools kept up to speed with industry.
Areas for the Future
6 Sigma, DMAIC Modle, Stastistical problem solving. Quality and Food safety Management (internationsl) standards, auditing skills, attention to details etc
