Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I come from traditional family background where both parents were in teaching profession. During education, owing to environmental constraints, I devoted more than enough time in schooling based learning, which in spite of its limitations, to an extent helped me to achieve key career goals in life.
Points of inflection
First inflection point came when I decided to pursue master's degree instead of opting for a full time job. Another important point came when I decided to work for a research lab as a part-time consultant with lower than expected compensation but a very interesting technical problem to work on.
Most Important Lessons
First, there is no alternative to in-depth technical knowledge beyond degrees and specified job roles. Next, we must constantly harness our ability to solve challenging technical problems. Last but not the least, keeping our emotions under control is equally critical in today's work environment.
A Fine Balance:
To manage time for yourself and family, it's critical to finish the tasks at hand well in the initial iterations itself to save much of the time which otherwise goes in correcting mistakes. Often this requires devoting enough time to analyze deeply the key challenges before jumping on to solve them.
Essential Advice
As a testing professional we must keep an eye on the technical details of the system design, testing tools, techniques, and approaches. Testing a system without knowing its finer details, without analyzing the kind of tools and approaches, which would effectively meet the set constraints is no good.
Current and Previous Responsibilities
My current role involves generating novel solutions to technically challenging problems in software engineering domain to create IP in the form of patent applications and research papers. My immediate previous profile was more on creating educational technical content on emerging technologies.
Changes in the industry
QA/Testing domain is now technically more challenging and broad based as compared to a decade back when I entered this field. Industry has adapted itself quite well to meet the emerging challenges in terms to producing more efficient, scalable, robust, and better automated tools and approaches.
The Journey So Far
Starting as a software engineering in ASIC testing domain to a researcher in the field of formal verification and software engineering, journey so far has been challenging as well as satisfying. I am happy to have made some modest research contributions in the field of real time system verification.
Most Important Decisions
Most important decision has been to opt for a research career in place of a software development. This decision has helped me to keep my focus on making research based contributions to the domain, which hopefully would make larger impact in long term in contrast to working on selected projects.
Degrees that Matter
Even though I have not opted for any certifications in testing domain, I nonetheless recommend going for ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) QAI (Quality Assurance Institute) certifications.
Areas for the Future
I definitely see significant role to be played by web based testing and formal validation and verification (FVV) approaches in time to come. For hardware systems, FVV based tools have already seen increasing application and overtime they would increasingly complement software testing as well.
Tech trends to watch out for
I am watching advancements, which are taking place in the Automated Test case Generation techniques, Hardware-Software co-testing, and web based testing especially in Cloud. It might become critical in future to have concrete knowledge and/or expertise in some of these areas from career perspective.
Currently working at
My current job as a researcher includes intellectual property generation through basic and applied research. I am working on to design and develop novel algorithmic platforms and computational mechanisms in the field of software engineering in general and formal verification in particular.
