Required Reading:
Books on using business statistics techniques and advanced analytics like SAS, VBA, Excel, etc. Also, books on market research and consumer behavior are helpful to hone your business skills. If you want to enter a specific industry vertical in analytics domain, say pharma, keep yourself upto date by following some websites like FiercePharma which give industry specific news and articles. IMS Health global publications are helpful too.
Working Life Management:
I plan my work and create a WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) at the begining of a project dividing the project into specific tasks, delegate work to the team and myself by these tasks and set timelines for each of these tasks. I keep 10-15% buffer while commiting timelines so that unavoidable and unforseen risks are accounted for. I commit to clients only what is actually possible and set right expectations at the beginning of a project. This way, I am able to finish my job in time, finish work and go home and spend quality time with my family. At the same time, I have set the expectation with my family that my work might sometimes require putting in extra time, but I will always let them know in advance if today is one such day.
