Brief description about me
An Indian-Australian, with nearly 20 years of hands on experience in armed forces, ITES, Real Estate, Consulting and Shopping Malls. During the stint in the army, I have been posted on Siachen Glacier, Kashmir Valley and an operational front. In the corporate sector, I have worked with global brands like EXL, Convergys, Dell, RBS and Deloitte, before working for shopping mall industry giants - Westfield and Majid Al Futtaim.
Over the years of work in various industries and geographies, I have come to realise that regardless of what may happen, life goes on....and while most of us work to live a life, but what we need to do is to be able to 'know ourselves', inside us, and while moving on in our careers and life, try to guide ourselves towards things that we like to do..if we love to do something, and we can do it, we would do very well in that field....and one more thing - when ever in a fix, always and always go back to the basics. Lastly, the whole life boils down to nothing but-TIME
More about myself
Having exposed to so many cultures, so many lifestyles, so many work environments and so many different companies, cultures, etc...one glaring that has stood out is - what ever we do in life; it all boils down to interpersonal relationships and people management....and this is further manifested in the adage - what goes around, comes around...
About career and life - the key is to know, whats inside us, and who we really are - the biggest strength and biggest victory of us is to 'know ourself'...and this is what makes us, and helps in realising our dreams and ambitions....
Degree that I recommend
Well, since I have come into the shopping mall industry, I have been going all around the world to do course and out of 5 certifications available, I have been able to get 4 and the last one is scheduled for March, 2014...and all going well, I would get that....so, if we want to grow in our industry, just experience and performance is not enough, we need to up-skilling ourselves, all the time, to know the evolving concepts, etc.
Initiative to develop a country
A country is nothing but the people of the country....a country without its people is a barren piece of land...as they say charity begins at home'...so we as individual professionals, in our capacity should make it a point to not only groom an upskill ourselves, but also take minimum 5 people under our wings for further grooming and nurturing. This way, people / workforce of the country will improve and the country will start doing better... Every professional has this moral obligation to contribute to the country, and not just by paying income tax or other levies.
Couple of years from now
All going well, heading a shopping mall business. Complete responsibility of not only the P&L, but also the balance sheet.
Ensuring success
Well, I keep myself abreast with the latest trends and evolution going on in the industry. I am also an online avid reader, so I keep myself posted about the other region, and how they are operating and trying out new things to become better. Being well informed is key to understanding and educating oneself. Then its a matter of application only.
Important decision
Firstly, migrating to Australia. This has changed our lives full 180 degrees, and not for me individually, but for the whole family. It has given us a better perspective of doing well in life.
Secondly, having an open approach to the changes that have come along the way. I have worked in various industries, and have done reasonably well. This has been possible just due to readiness for change, being positive and giving it the best shot.
Thirdly, being able to walk away from things, if they are not working. Only thing is to make sure that we have done our bit, in terms of putting in the best effort we could do.
My achievements
I am proud of what all I have been able to achieve in my life so far. From what I was, as a teenager, then the Army, and the multiple changes, some forced upon us, and some brought on by ourselves...but the journey so far as has been good.
I have been able to establish myself as one of the leading shopping mall professionals in the ME region, have been able to secure various educational certifications, and the best of all is the respect that I have been able to get from the various teams I have worked with, whether be it in Bahrain, be it Australia or Jordan.
Thoughts on Education system of our country
The education system is very bookish in its approach. It needs to be oriented towards real life learning's. if we can make our education system, which is close to what goes in life like setting up and running a business, like being a software programmer, etc.
This practical approach combined with the traditional hard work will make Indian education system one of the best in the world. Also, we need to control the outflow of students going overseas. this is due to shortage of good establishments, and this also leads to loss of foreign exchange.
Qualities needed to become a successful leader
The essential qualities from my point of view are;
1. walk the talk and talk the walk
2. be people-centric
3. respect, respect and respect for human beings
4. be fair and impartial
5. openness to feedback, this will enhance the respect for the leader
6. discipline about work - life balance
7. recognise & reward
8. Growth and development of teams
9. Shows the way of 'how to do it'
10. fixes just about all problems
My role model
There are lots of people whom one can name - but the key is 'why', and I think this is the differentiator between being successful and not being successful. It is not that the successful people do different things, they just do it differently...and at the core of it is the self-awareness of what one wants, what one is, and knowing what one can and cannot do...
My strongest skill
Time discipline...
People management
Systematic - process oriented
Broader understanding of everything
Adaptability
Influenced by

2. KISS - keep it simple stupid
3. Respect for people
4. Discipline about everything that we do in life
5. Lastly, knowing oneself
