U.S. Selects H-1B Visa Recipients by Lottery

Bangalore: The United States used lottery method to determine the recipients of H-1 B visa, on 7 April, stated The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The federal agency which started receiving H-1 B visa applications on April 1, announced on April 5 that it reached the cap. Overall, the United States received 124,000 applications for H-1B visas.

"For the first time since 2008, USCIS has reached the statutory H-1B cap of 65,000 for fiscal year 2014 within the first week of the filing period," an official statement said, adding that it also received more than 20,000 H-1B petitions filed on behalf of persons who are excepted from the cap under the advanced degree exemption.

"USCIS received approximately 124,000 H-1B petitions during the filing period, including petitions filed for the advanced degree exemption," USCIS said, as reported by PTI.

This is the first time after 2008, computerized draw of lots has been conducted to decide H-1B visa recipients.
