The 'Outstanding Achievement Award' was given out by Eric Kellogg, Mayor of City of Harvey in Illinois to Fr Cedric Prakash who is the Director of 'Prashant', an Ahmedabad-based Jesuit Centre for Human Rights, Justice and Peace.
Prakash is a Jesuit priest who is based in Ahmedabad.
At a special ceremony held at the City Council Chamber on Monday, Kellogg paid tribute to the stellar service to humanity rendered by Prakash.
The Mayor recalled the Gujarat riots which happened in 2002 and said Prakash's work shows us that there also "exists compassion, selflessness and an inspiring conviction in the brotherhood of humanity".
"This award is a reminder that none of us should be quiet until the cause of justice has been met," Prakash said.
