Indian-American Confirmed As Federal Judge In Massachusetts

WASHINGTON:  Indian-American, Indira Talwani has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a federal judge in Massachusetts, making her the first Asian - American federal judge in this state.

Ms Talwani, who is in her 50s, was confirmed by the Senate by 94-0 votes.

She is the first person of Asian descent in the First Circuit, which includes Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico and Rhode Island to serve as a judge.

Ms Talwani is also the second female judge of South Asian descent nationwide.

"Indira is a committed attorney with an exceptional record. She is admired by her peers. We are extremely excited that another deserving South Asian has been nominated to the judiciary," Nadeem Bezar, president of the South Asian Bar Association North America, said in a statement.

Daughter of immigrants from India and Germany, Ms Talwani is graduate of Harvard University and was later named the Order of the Coif at Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California Berkeley.

Ms Talwani is a partner at Segal Roitman LLP in Boston, where she focuses her practice on civil litigation at the state and federal trial court at the appellate levels.
