Indian American Ami Bera Elected to U.S. House of Representatives
Bangalore: Dr Ami Bera created history by becoming the third Indian-American ever to be elected to the US House of Representatives. The five other Indian American candidates couldn’t make it to the esteemed post, reports PTI.
Bera won the contest against his Republican rival and incumbent Dan Lungren with a lead of 184 votes.
According to the Office of the Secretary of State, California, Bera received 88,406 votes, which makes it 50.1 per cent of the total votes counted, whereas Lungren received 88,222 votes, 49.9 per cent of the votes.
California’s seventh Congressional District was one of the most competitive and costliest in America and moreover Bera was endorsed by the former US President Bill Clinton.
Only two Indian-Americans, Dalip Singh Saund and Bobby Jindal have been elected to the US House of Representatives so far.
Dalip Singh Saund became the first Indian American to be elected to the US Congress in the 1950s and Jindal served as a House member for two years, from 2005 to 2008 before being elected as the Governor of Louisiana.
The other five Indian Americans who contested in the 2012 elections are- Ricky Gill, Dr Syed Taj, Dr Manan Trivedi, Upendra Chivukula and Jack Uppal.
