Singh has won from the 69th district defeating Republican candidate Susan McGillicuddy and according to him the generation election held on November 6 was easier than the primary.
Singh was appointed as the city councilor of Michigan at the age of 24, becoming the youngest one to serve this post. He worked as the councilor for 10 years and later on was elected to the Mayor’s post.
Singh started his career in politics as a student leader and he tells that he never faced any racial prejudice so far. He also added", I served as a councilman and then served as mayor. People know about me. It is a very open electorate’’.
Singh intends to improve the status of economy, which is one of his immediate concerns. "The economy has stabilised now after reaching a low," he said. "The automobile industry is in upswing and makes profit. Many people had lost work earlier and the concern is to bring them back to work."
Apart from concentrating on economy, Singh plans to focus on education sector as well. He says, “We have to prepare our youngsters for a global economy. We need programs for that from schooldays."
Singh was honoured with the title ‘Spartan of the Year’ in the year 1993 by the MSU student newspaper, the State News.
