Bangalore: Bernadette D’Souza becomes the first Indian-origin lady to be appointed as the permanent family court judge of Louisiana. She was elected to this prestigious post on Feb 2 and took charge of the position from the beginning of this month.

D’Souza also happens to be the first Asian American women chosen to a judicial seat in Louisiana. She will be handling family law cases such as divorce, custody, support to spouses and children, community property, paternity and civil protection orders in cases of domestic violence.

D’Souza explained how important the new court will be and the effects it will have on the families served by it, in a victory statement.

D’Souza completed her graduation from the University of Tulane and later on served the same University as Professor of law and a legal consultant in the ‘Domestic Violence Clinic’ functioning there. She has been honoured with many professional awards and has also been practicing in public interest law for more than 18 years. Earlier, she worked as the managing attorney for the Family Law Unit based at New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation and later on at Southeast Louisiana Legal Services.
