Bangalore: Mehar Gujral, an Indian American student has come to her motherland to learn more about the reasons for poverty in the country and to study the functioning of various NGOs, as reported by Gurpreet Singh Mehak of Hindustan Times.

Gujral, a resident of Piscataway, New Jersey is the granddaughter of Panjab University’s University Business School former head KK Uppal. She is a civil and mechanical engineering student at Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies.

Mehar was highly inspired by a book she read previous year, ‘Half the Sky’, which gave her insights about the struggles women have to face, across the globe, including countries such as India. The book by Nicholas Kristof motivated Mehar do something for the underprivileged and she became part of ‘Girl Up’, a campaign by United Nations Foundation. The campaign aims to raise funds and create awareness, for the upliftment of girls in developing countries, through better education, healthcare and leadership training.

Mehar, Girl Up Club’s President at her institution has also attended the Girl Up Leadership Summit, which was held in Washington DC recently.

Mehar visited many NGOs in India namely Prabh Aasra, Ashakiran School in Hoshiarpur, Jan Shiksha Sansthan in Chandigarh and the SOS Village in Rajpura.
